  • VRay fur clumping

    Heya,

I´m trying to create a realistic Flamingo.

For the "feathers" on the body I would love to use VRay fur.
My first tests are working quite nice. The only thing I need would be a clumping option.
Is there anything which could do the same thing with the VRay fur?

    Thanks

Would you mind showing how you are doing your flamingo?

It is on our "to do" list and we will be looking into it. Do you have any particular recommendations as to how to control the clumping?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

could it be controlled with a map somehow? hairs in dark areas bend towards the nearest white areas or something? just thinkin off the top of my head, hard to visualise if its possible.

I'm posting for Andy Boyd since he can't post on the forum yet.

            "Fur Clumps:

            - A curve/ramp to control the clump tightness from base to tip (clump profile) with added texture control to set the amount of overall clumping.
            - Clump density - how many clumps (multiplied by texture map)
            - randomization control, like with length, to randomize the clump scale

            Frizz :
Would be great to get a noise - frizz on a per hair and a per clump"

              Ha good news! thanks Vlado.

From my point of view I would go a quite "easy" way of controlling the clumping.

              1. a curve for designing the clump itself.
              2. a number which defines how many hairs actually build on clump.
              3. a radius which controly the area for the clump base size (this can be a multiply of the curve)
              4. a connection from density to hairs per clump so that the looks doesn´t change much with more fur.
              5. randomize/texture options for each control (size, count etc.) are nice to have!

              Thanks in advance.

                Hi,

I know this thread is super old - but was there any progress with adding clumping options to Vray fur?

Would often come in super handy!

                Cheers

                Will

We did some work on it, but it never went into a release. In the meantime other tools like Yeti seem to do the job quite well.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

                    Thanks Vlado,

Thats a pity that it never got released - but I guess there are plenty of alternatives on the market.

I have heard some good things about Yeti. I think i'll play around a bit with xGen first and see what that offers (even though people seem to have mixed opinions on it).

Also really enjoying the rendering side of hair and fur in Vray 3.0. I have a couple of questions about render settings. I have read that you recommend using Brute force/light cache with retrace threshold checked and that using Embree can also improve render times.

But would it be possible to explain a bit about what the retrace threshold slider does? It defaults to 1 - but I am not sure what the value means.

Also I am also a bit confused by the how to use Embree. Should I be using the high precision tick box for hair and fur? The help file says that Embree only accelerates static geo. What does that mean with regards to Hair and fur?

                    Many thanks in advance!

                    Will

It would be cool if you could use guide hairs from XGen (Maya) to control vray fur. Maybe that's something you can look into.
