  • Material Sets

    Hi!
I just thought that it would be really nice, if we could create sets that contain polyfaces (not just whole objects, but specific faces) and attach an override material to that, so that vray renders parts of objects with different shaders than other parts. As everybody knows, Maya isn't working very well with face assignments, espescially when render layers are also used.
With the technique mentioned above we could bypass the buggy maya workflow. Would this be possible? I guess a lot of users would appreciate something like this.

(Or maybe there's already some way to do this and I just don't know it yet?)

    Thanks a lot!

We would really preffer if you complain to Autodesk about such general workflow issues . Supporting both user requested work-arounds and Maya's own attempts to fix the issues, is something that can end badly. Like you may know, Autodesk is redesigning the layer system for Maya 2017, and we are still now sure what to expect. I know a lot of people complain about the render layers system, but it's really something that Autodesk should fix.

Yes, I get your point of course. But the feature could come in handy in many other situations. Like applying object properties to faces, or maybe even displacement. And as I can't estimate the work needed for such a feature I better ask

      Thanks!

There is already a displacement material, and render stats/wrapper materials that can do probably everything that is possible on material level. Other features from the object properties will require exporting separate geometry objects, which will break other things (like subdivision).
