  • Dome light with HDRI

    Hi there,

What is the correct way to set up the dome light using a HDRI map for lighting in Modo?

I have a dome light and added the HDRI as a light color with spherical mapping. With Modo Environment material set to black but the whole interior is extremely dark even using a shutter speed of 5, F-stop 5.6? increasing the the dome light radiance is not really doing anything?

    is this correct?

You can just use the HDRI as an environment without a dedicated Dome light.
By default, Environment Importance Sampling is enabled in the V-Ray GI tab, which basically turns the environment into a Dome light.

If you still want to use a separate Dome light for some other reason (for example light linking, or light select elements), you might want to disable Environment Importance Sampling.
Also by default, the Dome light is not directly visible, you have to go into its V-Ray Light tab and unckeck Invisible.
Also by default, it's covering half the hemisphere, so you might want to check Dome Spherical in the V-Ray Light tab.

The radiance parameter should work, I am not sure exactly what is going on in your scene.
Can't say without having a look at the scene.

Like what Vlado said, make sure you check Dome Spherical for your Dome light.. And generally speaking for interior lighting you will need to use portals to guide lighting through windows.. this will make rendering way faster and you will get more illumination for your scene
If you have tiny windows, the dome light by itself is not going to be enough and you will need to add few area lights..
I uploaded a scene here with portals and Vray sun and sky, which does the same job just like a domelight and portals

You have to switch the Modo Environment completely off, thats why its so dark inside.
