  • Asking sutible tutorials for learning Vray for modo

    Hi,

I'm new to Vray and Modo is currently the only 3D software I use. So many beautiful images were generated by Vray which is the reason I'd like to know how to use it. There are many tutorials about Vray for other 3D packages like Maya etc., but I'm not sure if they are suitable for people like me using modo to learn Vray.

If those tuts are also applicable to Modo, which one would you recommend to study first?

    Thanks,
    Kent

For the most part tutorials for other versions of V-Ray should be applicable to V-Ray for MODO.
If you try to follow a tutorial and can't because something seems missing in V-Ray for MODO, just ask in this forum. We will try to help.
I haven't used many tutorials myself so can't give an advice on that, maybe google can help.

      Hi Vladimir,

Thanks for your response. I watched a Vray tut made by Grant Warwick and found it helpful.

      Here is lesson 01:
      https://vimeo.com/86010717

I'm trying to compare the parameters between Max and modo. Below are what I figured out (but not sure if those are all correct):

VrayLight pass in Max = Illumination (Direct) pass in modo
VrayReflection pass in Max = Reflection Shading pass in modo
VrayGI pass in Max = Illumination (Indirect) pass in modo
Sample Rate pass in Max = Shaded AA Samples in modo

      Light Subdiv in Max :
Function: Reduce the noise of VRayLight Pass
Similar in modo: Sample rate of the Light in modo (not in Vray properties tab)

Material Subdiv and Min/Max Subdiv parameters are similar in Max and modo.

I found that you can not avoid rendering items by turning off it visibility. So how do I selectively render certain items?

      Thanks,
      Kent

For the render elements / render outputs you can look in your "V-Ray for MODO" installation folder and then check the "docs/render elements.txt" file.
This file will tell you which Render output in MODO corresponds to which Render element in V-Ray for 3dsMax.
(You can quickly open the file by typing "%VRAY_MODO_INSTALL_PATH%/docs/render elements.txt" in a "Run" box.

For the light subdivs, you can either use modo's "Samples" channel or go to the "V-Ray Light" tab for the light, check "Use V-Ray Subdivs" and use
the "V-Ray subdivs channel. If you are following the max tutorials, it's best to use the second option, as otherwise you need to convert Subdivs to Samples.

Hiding items works in V-Ray for MODO as long as you use the item's "Visible" or "Render" channels. The "Visible" channel is only available in the "Channels"
view-port or by clicking on the little eye icon in the "Item List" view-port.

Using the View menu hide/unhide commands (with shortcuts H, Shift+H, etc.) doesn't work as it seems there is no way to get that state with the current MODO API.

As V-Ray for Modo matures, hopefully there will be more people who will provide more training that is Modo specific.

          Cheers,
          Jim

Though I have to figure out ways to convert the procedure for modo from Vray tuts for other 3D apps. It's still fun to learn. At least I'm quite happy about what I can achieve so far.
