  • Render setting presets

    Hi Vladimir,

would it be possible to implement saving presets and defaults of render settings? Settings I use are completly different from the current defaults so I have many unnecessary clicks on every scene.

In V-Ray Preferences there are some tickboxes stating which V-Ray packages are added automatically. Could you add also a tickbox for Physical camera package? Probably I am not the only one using always V-Rays Physical camera and it would be very convenient to have possibility to add it by default.

    Many thanks,
    Jakub

There is a hidden preference for automatically adding the V-Ray physical camera settings. Just execute "user.value vray.packageAutoAdd.physCamera true" in MODO's command line.
When you close MODO it will be saved for next time you open it.
Note that the settings are added when you select the camera, they won't be added if you just render with V-Ray.

I will add this preference to the rest of the check-boxes in the V-Ray preferences.

You can save presets on the "Render" item and then load them back from the "Presets" window (F6). When loading the preset back, you don't even need the Render item selected, it is enough to double-click on the Render preset.
I tested it just now though. And it seems this got broken in MODO 801. It won't load back the V-Ray render settings, as they are part of an additional package.
It works in MODO 701. I will write to the Foundry to ask them about this, if you can send a bug report too, it will probably make it more urgent to them.

Thank you for this info - it is quite convenient and will help me surely in many other situations. I'm on modo 801 sp 3 and it works exactly as it should. Interesting why it doesn't work for you?

Interesting indeed, I deleted my MODO801.CFG file and now it works. I wonder if there is some option for this somewhere that I changed, or the .cfg just got corrupted.

I have some bad news for the render settings presets. The 2015-01-17 nightly build will have a new channel in the Render item.
It is a custom type channel that stores the VFB window's settings. Unfortunately MODO will crash after loading
a Render preset where that channel was not present. The crash is delayed until you close the scene.
So you can still re-save your current presets.

For each preset you need to :
                1. Select the Render item
                2. Load the Render preset
                3. Save the preset with the old name

If after step 2 you close the scene, MODO will crash.

Once the presets are re-saved, they no longer cause crashes. Note that after doing this process, MODO will crash when you
close the scene where you did the loading/saving.
Hope you don't have too many presets saved.

Thank you Vladimir. It is not so bad with the workaround already explained!

the CFG-file gets corrupted a lot and it is the source of a lot of weird modo behavior. A good workaround is to delete the current CFG-file save a new one and set the access permission to "read only".

Just a heads up - I made a little change to the way "Automatically add V-Ray Physical Camera" works. It will now add the physical camera package not only when the camera is selected,
but also when you start a rendering (it will be added to the current render camera). This will be in the nightly build from 2015-01-25.
