  • Clearcoat

    Hi Vladimir,
Is it possible to add a clearcoat layer to the v-ray material similar to the carpaint material.
In 9 of 10 cases I have do a "blend material" just to have a clearcoat like in the old days pre modo 501 where the modo material didnĀ“t have the clearcoat feature.
The process is too cumbersome in the shader tree just to have a some clearcoat on the material.

A implementation would be highly appreciated.

I'm somewhat reluctant to do that; not that it's particularly difficult, but we would need to match that in 3ds max and Maya etc sooner or later, which will open more work for us down the road. We will do it if we have to, but I need to think about it. For the moment it would be much better to give you an easier way to do blend materials, perhaps through the shading node network.

The fact that the shadertree is cumbersome to work with is not exactly a V-Ray problem

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Pretty much the reason I use a Modo material over the Vray one.. you already support clearcoat!
Modo is actually capable to do shader blendings in the shader tree. Nothing new, but not a nice workflow.
I think until schematic allows that it will take some time. Which is a bid sad.
However why not simple take shader groups and add a vray tag to them?
So a material shader group has a sub-shader group on top that actually do nothing except having a Vray tag that tells Vray to blend them, with a percent value. That way you can add multiple. Its a bit like Modo does, except its much simpler.

We do support the "Shader" type blending in the Shader Tree.
We may eventually implement what you suggest or something similar - tagging "group masks" to represent layers in a blend material (or 2-sided material).
But this will change the rules of the shader tree a lot and I fear it might get confusing.
A blend material in the Schematic will come before that.
