I'm wondering how to check out a floating license for the new license setup used for modo. I don't see any documentation anywhere (is there any?)

ah - ok. So there's no floating license for modo? It's tricky because we do testing and are constantly getting new hardware so the dongle and license checkout for V-Ray for Maya works well. It's not a big deal but you'll probably get other customers asking for a floating license option for modo.Dave Girard | CAN-CON.ca | polygonspixelsandpaint.tumblr.com

We currently have 2 types of licensing for V-Ray for MODO, which we usually call "software" and "hardware" :
- software is locked to a particular machine, it is a floating license, but in order to use it on another machine, you need to start the Software license server on the machine where the license is registered and point the other machine to it.
We use this type of license for the open beta builds, which are downloaded from here : http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/downl...l?s=v-ray-modo
- hardware is the usual V-Ray license that is locked to a dongle, so you can move it between machines freely.
We use this type of license for the nightly builds of V-Ray for MODO.
Like Vlado said, if you are using the software version, it will be easiest to just request a new license for any new machine.

Thanks too.
One thing so, I got a hardware dongle upgraded for use the Beta. What would be optimal for me is to license that for a Modo version software dongle on a server and then have a floating licenses for beta usage. I guess even VPN would work when testing that.
The only thing I don't know is how to setup only the license. Or is it better to just install the beta, request a license and then use that one on all machines?
Is there some help file?

So if you want to use a software license on more than 1 machine, you will need to send the request code for each machine, or use the software license server.
The help is here :
http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...icenseSettings
The bottom of the page has info how to setup a machine to use another as its license server. I need to add a separate .command file for this on OS X ( I didn't because there was some problem with it).
This post from me has some more info on this : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...817#post640817

Well actually I want to use my license to have a permanent license instead register each beta. In the past that worked very well with a dongle plugged into the server. But I'm not anymore on windows.
So just to clarify that, is it possible to convert my license to a software license, install that on the server and use that then flexible in the network?
That would be cool as we could now add additional licenses in case we need.

You don't need to convert the license, as the licenses are free anyway, just request a software license.
It is possible, but when sending the request code, you need to specify how many licenses you want attached to it. All of them will be locked to that machine. And you can probably request a new license code for the same machine, but containing more licenses.
Then setup all machines on the network to use the license server machine (as explained in the link).

I think the licenses expire somewhere in August of this year, this is when the official release is planned for.
