I can't get displacement to work. Is there some special channel, etc?

There are special texture effects for displacement/bump/normal mapping. When you right-click on a texture's effect, these are under Surface Shading.
When using one of V-Ray's materials, the displacement/bump amounts can be found under the "Texture Layers" tab. Doesn't sound intuitive, but it is
a common place, so once you know they are there, it is easy to find for each material.

If you want more fine control over the displacement, you can add the V-Ray Geometry Properties to the mesh item.
Note that the displacement amount, displacement shift and water level in the V-Ray Geometry Properties will be multiplied by the displacement amount from the material.

MODO 801 also has additional channels on the material item called bump/displacement/stencil value. I think these are meant for schematic connections.
We don't support them yet, but we will soon, hopefully.

Also changes to displacement are not picked-up in RT right for now.

Displacement values seems a bit difficult to understand. Attached herewith I have a plane with a vray geometry properties applied to it. I want a 30mm thickness to the cutout plane.
It renders as a single face...untill I push the displacement to 300mm. But, adding a watermark it still works on 2mm.
I am sure the displacement value should work on 30mm? There seems to be a 0 too much in the values?Click image for larger version

The displacement amount is the amount of displacement, where the displacement texture is completely white. So, if your texture's brightest color is 1/10 of white, you will get a maximum displacement of 30mm with the displacement amount set to 300mm.
The water level on the other hand will always cut-off 2mm from that.
By the way, the 2d displacement mode seems much better for this kind of displacement (with sharp changes in the texture's values).
