For tomorrow's nightly build (2015-04-21) I've added a V-Ray toolbar that has buttons which allow direct access to the Render settings, without first selecting the Render item.
This will be in the 3.00.07 open beta build. Here is how the toolbar looks:

Vladimir, after installing this version I can't open modo unless I right click and run as administrator. Did something change in Vray or did I break my PC somehow?

What happens if you don't run it as an administrator. Does it crash or something else ?

Can you try the build from 2015-04-16 ? Other people reported problems with builds after it as well, but I can't reproduce them here.
It will help, if I know that indeed something happened on 2015-04-16 that broke the builds after that.

I will download it now and install, I'll come back to you.

PS. I really like the new toolbar.

It is the latest built. I installed the built from the 16th and it started up right. I installed the latest again (21st) and again I need to open Modo as administrator. This is on Windows 8.1 and Modo 801 SP4

It is the same problem, you can work around it by deleting rt_cuda.dll and rt_opencl.dll

For the 2015-04-22 nightly build (as well as for the 3.00.07 open beta build) I've split the vray.render command into the following commands
                        - vray.render
                        - vray.render.animation
                        - vray.rt.start
                        - vray.rt.stop
This is in preparation for extending the vray.render.animation command with more arguments,
and also makes using the commands easier, as now only the vray.rt.start command has an argument.
If you are using custom controls referencing the "vray.render" command, you will need to update them to use the new commands.

I've also added a new "pause" button to the V-Ray toolbar (implemented using a new command called vray.rt.pause.updates).
It works differently compared to the pause button in MODO's preview.
Instead of pausing the rendering, it pauses changing the scene. This way you can continue working on a new material for example,
while waiting for image noise to clear up. It needs more testing and optimizations, so make sure to save your scene before "unpausing",
as this is when a crash might happen.

                        Greetings,
                        Vladimir Nedev

This is fixed for the nightly build from 2015-05-19, as well as for the 3.00.07 open beta build.
                          It was indeed very annoying.
When one of the V-Ray materials is selected, the "Texture layers" tab will no longer be shown.
There is a "V-Ray Mtl Common" tab in its place, which contains the same controls.
Hiding the "Texture layers" tab was the only way to force MODO to select the correct V-Ray material tab,
instead of leaving the "Texture layers" tab selected.
