Would it be possible for Vray to just create the texture locators in the "Texture Group" Folder rather than in the root of the items list?
I know this is pety but it is nice to have a clean scene

When I try it on a new scene, that's where the texture locators go, for both the V-Ray Material and Car Paint material, as well as for the V-Ray textures.
I don't think I have control over this, it is something MODO does on its own. On your scene, does it work correctly for MODO's textures ?
Can you try createing a MODO "halftone" material ? It has a texture locator too and is a custom material as opposed to a texture.

I just tried it again in a new scene. If I add a vray material the texture locator goes to the Texture group. But, if you right click the modo material and change the type to vray material then the locator goes to the root of the item list.

Aha, I see now, I can't control this, so probably the best solution would be to implement a command that directly creates V-Ray materials, instead of having to convert the MODO materials to V-Ray materials.
Or you can also report it to The Foundry, since when converting to their Halftone material, the same thing happens.
