Hi, I'm a big fan of 'Blended Box Mapping' in 3ds Max and have just noticed in an update from Neil Blevins that Vray for Max has introduced a native Tex called VrayTriplanarTex - downloadable from here

    http://www.spot3d.com/vray/misc/vraytriplanartex.zip

I know it's a late request but any chance we can get this Tex plugin for Modo too?

And for those reading this not familiar Blended Box Mapping (and TriPlanar mapping) this page explains the UV-less workflow benefits nicely. The bottom of the page describes the new Vray Tex specifically.

Didn't someone on the Modo forum post how to do that with some replicator texture?

Other than that, we will be adding a plugin for the texture (we need it for V-Ray RT anyways), so maybe it will be available in Modo too.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I did see a horrendously complex workaround at one point but nothing as usable as your new Tex plugin (or Neils scripted approach for that matter). The workaround took longer than UV mapping in the first place.

Great to hear it's on the map for inclusion at some point.

One poster mentioned MODO's "Texture replicator", which has its options in the Texture locator of each texture.
I think it is mainly intended for removing texture repetition, when tiling a texture many times.
Not yet supported by V-Ray for MODO.

Another poster mentioned this nodal shading technique : http://community.thefoundry.co.uk/di...px?f=9&t=93906
I don't think it will work in V-Ray for MODO either, as it uses some unsupported nodes.

The Texture Replicator gives pretty nasty results to be honest, and the nodal technique is the one I was making reference too.

The VrayTriplanarTex looks to be the ideal solution seeing as Neil's 'blended box' scripts can't really be adapted.

It surprises me that Modo doesn't have a native triplanar solutiion; triplanar mapping is essential to and works really well in Mari.

Sorry for posting in a modo thread, but we maya users also would like to have this VrayTriplanarTex

There was an Mel script to enabled a similar approach to Neil's original 'Blended Box' methodology. Not sure if it's been maintained over the years though.

From the sounds of Vlado's original response to me, I wouldn'd be surprised if the VrayTriplanarTex found it's way into all versions of V-Ray. I'm sure it would be appreciated by users of the Sketchup and Rhino versions of V-Ray as well as the high end DCC flavours.

                Hmmm...

I posted about this on the MODO forum and people didn't seemed to be very excited about the news:

                VrayTriplanarTex thread on MODO community

I'm personally very excited about it in Vray for Max, but apparently people was happy with the options/hacks in MODO?

Doesn't surprise me. Whenever you bring up features in 3ds to the Modo faithful you're likely to be met by 'the cult of the nonplussed'. Mention the selection tools in Houdini and they'll be salivating but poor old Max just isn't cool for school in the Modo playground.

I'd personally never use triplanar mapping as a replacement for unwrapping, but it's ace for dirt/grunge maps on assets where the core of the look is being driven by the shader rather than texture maps.

Yeah, it does get a bit ridiculous at times.

                      Hi,
would love to give it a try, but after copying the right file into C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2014\plugins\vrayplugins
                      I get the error message:

Which V-Ray version do you have?

                        Best regards,

It works only on V-Ray 3.x unfortunately; I didn't have time to compile it for 2.x yet.

                            Best regards,
