In modo V10 the interface slows to a crawl when RT is active. Not sure whats causing it but its awful... unworkable... click something wait 5 seconds for the interface to update. As soon as I stop RT its snappy and fast again. I tried limiting threads on RT but nothing works. Just having it on in general slows the UI interaction.

Are you using RT CPU or GPU ? The thread limit is for the CPU version only.
For GPU, decrease the ray bundle size and rays per pixel. The values shown should work fine.
I will make these options global preferences eventually, but for now you have to change them for every scene or set them in your default scene.

Also make sure that you don't have any of the move/rotate/scale tools active while you are doing some other changes to the scene.
When these tools are active, even if you are not changing anything with them, MODO sends changed events to V-Ray causing it to re-export the transformations of selected geometry.
If you are doing modifications to the geometry (moving points, polygons, edges) this will cause V-Ray to re-export the mesh data for the changed mesh, so this can slow down the UI as well.
Also, adding new material groups to the Shader Tree may cause the re-export of some of the scene geometry, as material slots on the geometry may change.

I have no idea. You can try lowering the number of threads used by RT CPU, lowering the CPU rays per pixel and not having a move/rotate/scale tool active, like I mentioned above.
I don't have other ideas.
