  • Falloff material curve

I did see in some Max video tutorials using the falloff material with a curve dialog to set, for example, the incidence effect in a velvet material.
Is it possible in VRay|modo? I didn't find a way for doing this.
Moreover, it looks like the falloff material lacks of some parameters... or maybe it is me.
For example, the far/near falloff doesn't let me set the far point and the near point.

Yes, the curve is missing, I plan to add it at some point.
You could pipe the Falloff through a MODO gradient using Driver A/B/C/D effects, but it is not quite the same thing, as internally in 3ds Max, the curve is applied before blending the colors.

When you select distance blend for the type, the near/far distance will show up.

      Thanks Vladimir!
Now i see the near/far parameters.

By the way, i thought that falloff was usable as a surrogate of the modo gradient, but making it generate a radial falloff from, say the locator position is nearly impossible to me.
How a planar falloff should be intended to be made in VRay? The only answer looks like to use gray radial bitmaps. Is it possible to achieve procedurally?

      Thanks! Umberto

MODO's gradient has more modes than V-Ray Falloff and we support at least some of them.
And we can add more as needed. See here : https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...y-MODOTextures

How do you make a planar falloff with MODO ?
Using distance to locator in the gradient texture ?

          Yes, i usually do so.

I see that modo gradient has lots of options more that VRay falloff, and i understand that maybe not everything is portable.
Please note: i don't mind using directly VRay materials if i can get my result. I don't really need that modo stuff is mapped into VRays.
To be honest, if modo were 100% mapped to VRay i'd use modo's. But not being this true, i feel better using VRay's because if something doesn't work i know it's me and not the missing wiring underneath.

          Cheers! Umberto

The gradient texture is pretty powerful, so you will probably have to use it, even though not all inputs are supported. There isn't an equivalent for a lot of the gradient inputs in our textures.
You can use the compatibility page to check what is supposed to work.

If something seems off, just report it here in the forum.
