V-Ray for Modo, 3DSMax and Maya

  • V-Ray for Modo, 3DSMax and Maya

    Hi, everyone,

    I have a question to those who have both V-Ray for Modo and V-Ray for either 3DS Max or Maya. If I learn V-Ray for 3DS Max or the one for Maya, will I be able to transfer or apply that knowledge to V-Ray for Modo? There are so many training videos online for V-Ray for 3DS Max and Maya and I'm wondering if there is not much difference between the Modo version and those other two. Perhaps someone with working experience using V-Ray for Modo and the other plugins would be so kind to shed some light on this for people who are new to V-Ray like me. What are the common features between the versions (Modo and 3DSM || Modo and Maya) so that when we watch the videos we will know what features to skip watching since they don't apply to the Modo version. Thank you.

    I've gained most of my current knowledge of V-Ray for Modo from 3DS Max based training. Everything directly relating to V-Ray render and material settings translate almost perfectly. For some shading related stuff you have to 'translate' some Max stuff to Modo equivalents, such as using gradients for fresnel etc.

    There's differences in how V-Ray integrates with the host apps and for these things you simply apply your knowledge of your host app of choice, in this case Modo, and work it out in combination with the useful V-Ray for Modo documentation. The things I am thinking of here is stuff like V-Ray object properties, the sun and sky system and other things that integrate with and rely on Modo's existing features. It's all fairly straight forward and should not be cause for concern.

      Same here, I've been watching Max and Maya videos. Sans the differences in the DCC UI, nearly all of the tick boxes etc. seem virtually the same, or close enough that you wont be lost if you switch.

      Every so often you run into a small feature that one has and the other doesn't, but it's not all that often in my limited experience.

      It's actually one of the reasons I picked up Vray for MODO- in case I need to work onsight for a client that uses another DCC.

        Thank you, Neverko and GidPDX! I really appreciate your input. Since V-Ray for Modo had just been released, there were not many training materials available online for new users. I subscribed to the GnomonWorkshop just last month and there were some really good V-Ray videos there for 3DS Max and Maya. It's good to know that there's not much difference between the different versions of V-Ray, so I can watch them. Thanks again for your valuable input!

          The fun thing in Modo is that you can mix Vray and Modo shading. Not all supported of course, but with Vray shading you can even expand things in Modo. So taken any finished Modo scene will probably produce a similar result in Vray. Be careful if you go Vray only way in shading, you might need an unsupported feature and going back to Modo gets difficult then.
