  • quick material assignment

    Hello guys,

in 10.2 there´s a new dropdown for a few of Modo´s Material Types when pressing "m". Maybe there could be a few of vray materials as well to accelerate the workflow

    all the best

    HI Christian,

Thank you for the feedback. You can use new search box tool to load a V-Ray material. I've been used daily since 10.2 was released. It is a good and easy solution to finding a specific material or material channel. Please check an attached file.

Thanks for the tip boyan! This is indeed a very useful feature! Do you know if there is a shortcut key for that like with the procedural popup (shift+N)?

      Thanks in advance

        Hi Christian,

Yep, thank you for the information. Very useful for me. Unfortunately, I don't know the shortcut. But I've made an inquiry about it to James Darknell aka Mutantpixel. I will keep you posted.

          Hey Christian,

James Darknell has informed me that specific searching box option hasn't had a shortcut.

I don't think it's possible for us to extend this list of materials.
I've asked on The Foundry forums about this : http://community.thefoundry.co.uk/di...?f=37&t=126811
Maybe add your opinion there to let them know it's important to you.

While we wait, I've added a popup in the "Texture Layers" and "Material Ref" tabs that lets you convert the currently selected MODO materials to any V-Ray material type.
This is the same as right-clicking on a material and choosing Change Type (i.e. properties like diffuse color, etc, are not converted), but saves you a few annoying clicks.

Edit: this will be in the nightly build from 2016.10.21.

                  Hey All,

Thank's Vladi. I've been adding a config file for a shortcut : Alt+M. To work with that you need to download and put it to your MODO configuration folder by default the path is : "C:\Users\YOUR_NAME(need to change)\AppData\Roaming\Luxology\Configs\". If you don't to use or want to assign it to a different key, in command history type : "vray.material.changeType", press ENTER to execute it. Next, add a key combination it.

Wow the easy conversion is really interesting, does it also convert the settings correct?
I still wonder why any Glass defined with Modo shaders renders lot slower then as Vray Material, that way I can find out.

As a side node, maybe that little menu on top can be enhancement with a 'save setting for that material' and 'load settings'

Checked that. Indeed it just replace the material, no conversion. Thats sad. I would loved to see it convert. Would have been lot easier for Modo users.

                        Hi Robert,

Thank you for the feedback. Yep, that is the idea to replace the existing MODO material. If you're happy with MODO material then don't convert it. My opinion is that V-Ray for Modo has a very good implementation for a native MODO material. BTW, if you want to convert V-Ray mat use "Create openGL preview" option. But, I am guessing that you are a far more familiar with this. Maybe option going to have far more advanced features as load a preset e.g. milk, snow, or something like that, but we'll see.

The render-time conversion of the MODO material has the equivalent of Reflect on back side from the V-Ray material enabled.
That's the most likely reason it renders slower. I think the MODO renderer does something in-between, it's not quite what the V-Ray material does with Reflect on back side enabled or disabled.

As a side node, maybe that little menu on top can be enhancement with a 'save setting for that material' and 'load settings'
If we add presets they will most likely be per-material type, so each different material type will have some menus at the top of its UI.

Checked that. Indeed it just replace the material, no conversion. Thats sad. I would loved to see it convert. Would have been lot easier for Modo users.
Maybe in the future, but it will do some very simple conversion.
The MODO and V-Ray material are different enough that converting between them without involving some math is not possible.
The render-time conversion will always be better, and when I improve it, the difference will be even bigger.

                          Greetings,

I never really understood the propose of 'reflect on back side'. I see no big differences, of course there may be occasion you actually see them, but it didn't happen to me. But 3 times longer render times? Thats ruins the conversion to me. Maybe you can check that and decide if its needed.

                              Hi Vladimir,

just tested the new replacement feature and its working really neat! The conversion (even a rough one) would of course be the icing on the cake.

Thanks a lot guys for your awesome support!
