  • Vrscans- Can we use this system with MODO? If so how?

Does the vrscans system work with MODO? The help pages make me think it's only for MAX and Maya at this point.

It would be good to have this system in place given how many people using MODO are working on projects that could very much make use of the system.

The VRscan material is not available in the V-Ray for MODO UI yet, so you can't use it.
It's a bit more complicated to code compared to something like the alSurface material, because it uses special licensing.

Also note that the VRscan and its library are subscription only from what I understand.
I am not sure if MODO users will like this aspect of it and how it will affect its actual adoption in V-Ray for MODO.

      Thanks Vladimir for the reply.

I think that the segment of MODO users who would use vrscans wouldn't be against a subscription to them since it means often they are working with work groups or companies that request the use of them or prefer it. It would just be a cost of business to them.

While not subscription, many MODO users bought CAD importers, one of which was at the time nearly the cost of MODO. Cost wasn't really the biggest concern for them, more parity with others.

Given that MODO is also used by certain corp. entities that are involved in industrial and apparel design, I'd think if those customers had Vray licenses they'd be very interested in vrscans for MODO.

Maybe MDL will replace this all to some extent?

        +1 for VRscans for Modo
I will be the first one to get them really! And I have no problem with their current licensing system for Maya and Max! They get updates every once and while so subscriptions is ideal.

The V-Ray for MODO nightly build from 2018.02.03 ( build number 28009 ) has the V-Ray Scanned material.

Note that this material requires a UI license for its interface to be available.
If the interface is disabled, you can click on any of the controls and a dialog will pop-up telling you that a license could not be obtained.

The VRscan licenses are the same across different DCC apps, so you can request a trial for one of the other supported apps from here : https://www.chaosgroup.com/vrscans#library-trial
and use it with V-Ray for MODO.

High Vladimir, is it normal that on Vray Mac os (build nightly 9.03.201 when I select the V-Ray Scanned material to add on the tree I get the running spinning wheel of waiting for some minutes? And then every time I click to an option I get again the spinning wheel for some seconds...

No, it's not normal, we will check, if we can reproduce it.

Can you try borrowing your vrscan licence through the online licensing interface ?
Maybe this will resolve the issue.

Have you restarted your macOS recently, or has it been running for a very long time ?

The most likely reason for the slow down in your case is that you don't have a VRscans license.
I will try to fix it so it's not so slow.

You can get a free 90-day trial on this page : https://www.chaosgroup.com/vrscans#library-trial
Any of the 3dsMax/Maya/etc versions will work with Modo, since the license is the same.
An official Modo trial will be hopefully available when we release V-Ray 3.6 for Modo.

                  Thanks!

I saw only now the answer! We're waiting to request the trial since our workflow is based on the Vray GPU and we saw that the Vray Scan are supported on the GPU only with Vray Next. So we wait for the first nightly soon
