  • ZBrush to MODO

    Hi

Are there any settings in VRay for getting sharp render of fine detail when using displacement maps from ZBrush in MODO?

My test render looses seem of the fine details, but just wondering which thing to tweak - MODO, ZBrush or VRay?

    Many thanks!

    Hi Pali,

Well, nice question. You can play with AA filter as for example to change it to "Area" or to reduce size value. More information here: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/.../Image+Sampler
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to test a workflow MODO-Zbursh-V-Ray yet, but it is in a TO-DO list.

    Best Regards,

Thanks Boyan! I'll definitely give that a try. There has been a post on the MODO forums some years back about "missing" detail - I've got some things to play with!

        Hi Pali,

OK, let's try something and test with your scene. In a V-Ray, you can arrange displacement Globally or in an individual level. I prefer the second method so, I've made a video How-TO-DO it.

Please bear in mind that increasing values will cost you a more RAM. By the way, I would love to see your's tests here.

          Hi Boyan

Many thanks for this!! Very helpful. I've been working on this today, and am getting closer to having correct displacements in the mesh from ZB back in MODO now. I was doing several things incorrectly, but I think I've got it now. I need to go back a few steps, but when I've got a good model back in MODO, Ill add your VRay settings and post the results here.

          Your help is very appreciated!!
          Thanks again!

            Hi Boyan

I've sculpted a newer model with the correct low res mesh for the displacement map to work properly. Here is part of the sculpt (jus the mouth of the rhino) in ZBrush. I could go to a very high poly count using Geometry HD, so could achieve a lot of detail:

Here is the results following your video - I got very similar results using the MODO in terms of resolution. Here are the VRay settings following along from your video:

One thing is that I had to use the 'standard' displacement of 1m for the EXR displacement file, but I've heard that with VRay it's possible to work out the exact displacement distance - is this true?

Is there anything else I can do in VRay to increase the quality to get closer to the ZBrush result? I tried playing the settings in your video, but didn't notice a great change.

I've tried also doubling the Redner Subdivision in MODO from 2 to 4 , but I've also been told that the micro poly displacement does not depend on the render levels.

            Many thanks!

              Hi Pali,

Perfect example. Check my scheme, check the speed and memory usage with it, to increase the details you can use and texture's High and Low Value, also.

              Cheers,
