Is the possible? Have tried saving out material and it fails to import back into scene. Also if its possible how and how to attach a render to its preview.

When you right-click on a material in the Shader Tree, there are Save Preset... and Save Preset With Thumbnail... options.
The second one lets you choose an image for the preview.
Seems to be working for me.
Note that if you want to save the textures as well, you need to right-click on the material group and save that.
This is all handled by MODO, if something fails to import back in a specific situation, it's not something we can fix. You need to report it to The Foundry.
If your material uses Schematic nodes, I think you need to add all of them to a Workspace group.

Actually, if you have Schematic nodes, try also what's described in this post : https://forums.chaosgroup.com/showth...961#post682961

I don't think there is a way to hook into the MODO code that saves the presets.
I guess it tries to render the material with MODO, but for the most part our materials are not supported in the MODO renderer, so you get the black image.
You can do it like this:
1. render the material with V-Ray in the VFB
2. save the rendered image to disk
3. choose Save Preset With Thumbnail... and choose the image rendered with V-Ray
Not ideal, but I don't think it's possible to improve it at the moment.
Still, no need to setup the material separately to render with MODO.

You can later change the thumbnail in preset browser.
Node on Schematic: I place all nodes in the shader group, in an own group that I simple name 'nodes' and hide it. I never had problems importing these presets. Modo actually creates a shader workspace if you import a preset no matter if you used it or not.. not so clever.
One thing that doesn't work is copy paste a shader group from one scene to another will not include any schematic linking. Thats a bug.
