  • Displacement

    Hi again.

I've read the docs and still have questions about displacement.

    1. Under V-Ray Mtl Common we have Displacement Distance
    2. Under V-Ray Geometry Properties we have Displacement Amount

The questions I have are -

Is this a duplication of an option?

Are they different? If so, in what way?

    Thanks

    Pete

These two options are multiplied together to get the final displacement distance.
They are different in the sense that one is per-material while the other is per-mesh.

I am not sure it was a good idea to have both of them...probably should have left only the material one.

Note that the displacement distance from the material multiplies the following values:
    - displacement amount from geometry properties
    - displacement shift from geometry properties
    - water level from geometry properties
i.e. the displament amount/shift and water level are relative to each other.
So if you have 1m displacement amount, a water level of 0.5m will cut the displacement in half, irrespective of the displacement distance from the material, which could be 5mm for example.

I used the Material common one, and noted the render time was a fair bit longer when you enable the displacement.

You can enable static displacement from the V-Ray Geometry Properties to improve the render time.
I will change the default in the future.
