  • Modo Schematic View question

    Hey there.

I've been slowly making my way through Grant's tutorials.

    Couple questions.

    One:
In modo, does the order of the shader tree items have an impact on how the schematic view works?

    Two:
You know how you can specify the type of material the particular item will affect, does that actually apply if you're creating links in the schematic view? it seems like they don't update eachother in modo.

    For instance:
I can add a gradient, and link it to vtml reflection glossiness it in schematic view, but in the shader tree, it will still show as diffuse color.

    Thank you.

Two,it shows as diffuse color if you have the gradient above the vray material in shader tree. And it will show as Rglossiness if you have the gradient below the Vray material in shader tree.
    One,yes
-If you have your textures above the Vray material in shader tree they will override your schematic connections. (But some effects can only be achieved in schematic)
-To be able to use schematic connections, place the the Vray material or Vray blend on top of everything in the material group in shader tree. Now,even if it is set to diffuse color,it will work according to what you have in schematic
-For displacement, bump or normal mapping to work, you need to set the effect in shader tree. If it is set to diffuse color it will not work even if you connected it to bump or normal channels in schematic
-If you are using Vray blend material and 2 coats with different textures for each of them, shader tree will not work. You need to do this in schematic and like I said, some other effects will be only achieved in schematic
-You can for example connect an image to Vray color correction texture in schematic. Then use the shader tree and set this color correction node to any effect you want.
I will make a video on the weekend on this topic.

Hm, I don't think that's true, it works just like the other effects.

Although, there is no Schematic connection for the displacement, since that's a property of the geometry. You can't blend materials with different displacement textures.

I can add a gradient, and link it to vtml reflection glossiness it in schematic view, but in the shader tree, it will still show as diffuse color.
The effect of a texture is NOT related to where you connect it using Schematic connections.
You can have a texture in the Shader Tree affecting the material below it according to the effect, and the same texture connected using the Schematic to some material in a totally different part of the Shader Tree.

Thanks Vladimir. I didn't know I can connect maps to normal or bump slot in schematic without setting their effect in shader tree.
I even used to duplicate my existing schematic maps first before using them in bump slot to change their effect in shader tree
But now I know it works like all other effects

Ok, so those can act in two ways. Is there a way to make sure the texture won't affect the thing below it and only behave as in the schematic view? (with the exception of the displacement/bump ones you mentioned.)

            Thank you!

Put the textures in a group and disable the group. Then it doesn't matter where they are in the Shader Tree.
You are supposed to put the Schematic textures in the special "Nodes" folder, but then MODO might mess up creating/importing presets of that material.
