  • VRay Equivalent to MODO Stencil?

    Hi

I know that the MODO stencil does not work on VRay materials - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...+Compatibility
but is there a workaround that I could use in VRay? Im trying to use this to cut shapes from the edges of a flag to look like rips.

    Any help appreciated!
    Many thanks
    Pali

    Hi,

Well, you can use Stencil with MODO material, and relative to it is opacity map. So you can try vmtl Opacity Color or vmtl Opacity Grayscale with your texture.

Thanks Boyan - that's exactly what I was after!

Keep in mind that V-Ray Opacity has got a bug and doesn't work with SubSurfaceScattering. So you can use same texture to mask that out too.

Just in the midst of upgrading my gpu's (now 3 x GTX 1080) and am getting back into Vray for Modo. Really hoping there's an updated solution to the lack of stencil support for the RT GPU. Will stencil be supported anytime soon?

You can use the V-Ray material's "opacity" with V-Ray GPU.

Found the setting and definitely worked like a charm. Have to start digging deep into VRay (for Modo). Making it my primary renderer.

Thanks Vladimir. Do you know if anyone is doing any in-depth tutorials about VRay marterials / shading for Modo? Richard Yot's videos are great but don't delve into specific VRay material options within Modo.

I don't think anyone is. You will probably have to use the information available for other V-Ray integrations like 3dsMax/Maya/Sketchup.
If you have trouble converting a setup, you can always ask here or in the Skype group.

Also note, that do the newer changes in VR opacity mapping the SSS now supports any opacity clipping, if you use clip or stoachastic methode.
