  • Vray RT + egpu

    Hello everyone,

I have question for a laptop configuration.
I m working on Vray RT gpu and gonna move from Paris to Tokyo, and I want to buy a laptop + a razer core v2 to put my gtx 1080.
What kind of laptop do you think I need? A strong one or middle one? I m not sure if a laptop + a razer core is good... But I think it's the better way for me. I dunno if I need a strong I7 7700k of if a 7700HQ is enough. Or an other one.
By the way I also work on after effect and photoshop.
    I gonna take a gtx 1070 inside

    So what do you think?
The question is, if I have a razer core v2 do I need to buy a 3000$ laptop (or more) or 1500$ is enough?
    May you help me?
    Cheers

    Hey Barba10,

Well, I think the better idea is to check our benchmark app https://download.chaosgroup.com/?product=57. I am sure you can find a configuration like your idea.

I was thinking buying the razor a few times. But I want to see it in the shop first. Most such laptops look totally different in reality. Bad screen with grey instead of black, bad plastic design, etc. I never seen a PC Laptop look nearly as perfect as the Mac ones, well with Microsoft being close to it. But of course you can't see the hardware inside. But then I remember that I often bought such ones and they worked badly. Its a matter of art to put the peaces together in a way to get a good and fast laptop.. very difficult. Wish there would be a rental.

I understand, but I already work on PC. And use to work with several software not mac os compatible.

Actually what's the link between Razor and Mac or PC laptop? I just want the power of the gtx 1080

Absolute agree. The GTX.. 1060-1080 is the main reason I won't buy a MacBook. Note that I will not use the 'PRO'. The ignorance of Apple however goes way over that. The slow down CPU and GPU to prevent overheating, only because they want it to be a thin laptop. Same for the iMac- not -Pro.
Anyway. There are also other things. Apple uses really good screens. I compared that in a shop seeing the models side by side. Its a huge difference. Plus there Retina technology is just awesome. On Windows it starts with the annoying things once you compare. Like preview missing on windows, instead you get a bunch of ugly viewers that not even do half of the job. Yet once you only work in your program you won't need it.

              Hello people,

              I update this post because I bought a laptop on Eurocom.com and chose a 15 inch with a gtx 1080 and i78700k.
So I finally bought this week an eGPU dock, the akitio node thunderbolt 3. I pluged an other 1080 gtx and it's work perfectly well. Now I can use the power of 2 gtx 1080 in gpu rendering.

Also note that rendering on external eGPU cards work very good in Windows. Not with OSX, there are limitation, like having to use the card for a monitor to make it work etc.
My 1060 in my laptop also does a very good job. Modo, Nuke, Vray and Redshift all working very fast...
