  • God Rays With VRay Environment Fog

    Hi

Im starting work on a new scene, and have this lit by a single standard Modo directional light. I've added VRayEnvironmentFog to the item list and played about with the intensity of the fog and the light to get a balance I like. I really want to get the light beams as they shine through the trees.

I've followed through this tutorial for Chasogroup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQMnNM6q5YM&t=180s

I have a modo directional light that i've converted to a VRay Sun, and have played about for a whole morning with the VRayEnvironmentFog settings and moving the light around, but no light rays ever appear.

Is this a bug? What am I missing??

    Any help GREATLY appreciated!

    Many thanks!

I am attaching a simple scene that shows a strong "god ray" effect.

Directional lights work best, but since they are infinitely away, you have to use either a fog gizmo or the fog height, or the fog will be infinite too, and the directional light can't penetrate it.
Otherwise you just need to play with the fog distance.

If you want god rays through clouds, you don't have to simulate the clouds themselves with fog, just a stencil will do.

    Greetings,
    Vladimir Nedev

Here is some initial progress I made.
I am using my own scene with trees that are just a billboard with a stencil texture.
I had to wait quite a bit for the noise to clear before the god rays became apparent.

This is using only a simple directional light, no sun. Also there is no sky, the environment is black.
So it's more of a "night" scene.

        Hey Rali,

I think you can achieve the result with V-Ray Sun/Sky only. If you want to boost the effect you should add a second light. Why is that, well exterior renders are dominated by GI and this a reason the effect to look not so mighty.

Sorry to jump in on this thread. I try the god ray thing and no matter what scene I have tried it in I always get this line ( see attached image ) -

            Hello,

I have the same kind of "bug" here, with a V-Ray Sun and the Environment Fog. Is it a known bug and if so, when it is planned to be fixed ?

              Hey,

Increase the Sun' Size Multiplier to 100 to avoid the behavior.

              Cheers,

                Hey Boyan,

Thanks for the tip, but what if I want to keep hard shadows ? I want to keep an artistic control over the lights and shadows look.

Well, In this case, I recommend using secondary Direct Light for Environment Fog -Only.

Yes, I came to the same conclusion.

But can you confirm me that the bug is known and will be fixed ?

                      Thanks for the feedback.

The issue is logged to our system and btw this is a core issue not a specific one to vModo project.

                      Cheers,
