  • Render outputs and speed

I understand that adding render elements / outputs slows down the rendering process. I am not sure where I can turn off all the render elements if I just want an RGB + Alpha channel. It seems that there are still outputs being made - not in the shader tree, but in the pulldown list shown below. I added two outputs, Surface ID and Depth. But there is a long list of other outputs on the left there that I have no idea how this list was created. I didn't add these to be rendered. I DID want to generate a Material ID Output, which I can only find available if I turn on Bloom and/or Glare sections. Are these two outputs the same or different from each other? Why isn't Material ID in the list of Render Elements? I wonder how I can generate a rendering with just alpha, RGB and Material ID without using glare and/or bloom.

I am wondering if having all of these outputs on is slowing me way down. This 2400x1350 render took 10 hours. WAY too slow. I need this down to 2 hours or less!

    Thank you.

They are automatically created when you enable the denoiser. It uses them for the denoising process.

EDIT: Enabling bloom/glare will also add additional outputs automatically.

I don't know how you are rendering, and I'm no expert on getting fast archviz renders. The simplest way is to use the default progressive sampler, set max render time to 0, and enable the denoiser

You can then watch the render and click the "switch to RGB / effectsResult output" button, to toggle between the denoised and raw rgb outputs. Once the denoised version looks OK to you, you can just stop and save the render

Like funk said, these are auto-added when you enable the denoiser. The denoiser needs them to do its job.

Which 2 elements ? SurfaceID and Material ID ?
Surface ID is a combination of the item and the material, so the same material on a different item will get a different surface ID.
Material ID is V-Ray specific and can be specified in the material group.
The top-most material group affecting a material that also has the V-Ray Properties will be used to specify the material ID color.

Why isn't Material ID in the list of Render Elements?
It's a V-Ray specific element, the list in your screen-shot includes only the render elements available in both Modo and V-Ray, at least for now.

See the attached screens for where you can add the material ID render element.

Cool! I guess I wasn't aware of the nested Additional Outputs in the list. Thank you.
