  • Modo Shaders respected?

I am wondering if I create a group in the shader tree with its own shader set to monte carlo (for trees and grass rendering to use brute force instead of GI,) will VRay respect that an calculate the hi poly vegetation with Brute force and thereby speed up GI?

    Hey, Daniel,

Well, by default V-Ray used Brute Force Monte Carlo for primer GI. If you want to use Irradiance Map with specific shader you have to assign V-Ray Object Properties to Shader and enable it. Check the video file how to do that.

I also recommend to you to check the V-Ray for Modo compatibility page: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...y-MODOTextures

No, we don't respect this option.
We have a separate one in the V-Ray Object Properties, which does more or less the same, see attached screen-shot.
Disable it and brute force GI will be used on those materials, even if the primary GI engine is set to Irradiance Map.

Hmm, my first test results in an even slower rendering, maybe that works different in VRay. I rendered a region with lots of leaves with IC/LC and for the green IC switched off in the object properties, rendertime normal 16 min, with IC for green switched off 19 min.

The point is to make the result look better, it will render slower since it's firing more GI rays.

Ah okay, in Modo setting leaves/grass to MC will speed up the rendering a lot without looking worse. But it seems Vrays IC is a lot faster and more efficient than Modos IC.

...and that's why we are here! LOL. I am really loving the immediate improvement in speed and quality. I also am very impressed with little things like:

              1. Many new tools in Frame buffer, Although Levels is very touchy and I just ruin my image with a slight move of the slider.
              2. I like how I can continue to poke around the settings while rendering. Modo locks you out and you can't double check for a bad setting before canceling your rendering.
              3. Stop and start is much faster than modo. On big scenes it can take minutes for modo to release.
              4. Tons of outputs.
              5. I cant wait for Cloud rendering. (When is that starting up?)

              So excited!

You can apply for access to the V-Ray Cloud Beta here : https://www.chaosgroup.com/cloud

YEp, I did. I was just wondering if there was a hint for how long left to wait for the beta to start. Assuming I can use it from modo.

They are gradually adding more and more people to the Beta.
You can use it in Modo, yes, there is a Render in V-Ray Cloud entry in the V-Ray menu in Modo.

If I apply an Item shader to an object in the item list and set that shader to Monte Carlo, will it be excluded from the VRay Irradiance Cache? I wasn't sure if I could do this or if I had to do shaders per material in the shader tree.

                          This option is not respected.
We have our own in the V-Ray Object Properties tab.
It can be used on an Item shader, yes.
                          See attached image.
