  • Ambient occlusion RE facets

    Hi
The AO pass from vray always seems to have facets when the object is not very hi poly. I sort of know this makes sense, but the Modo AO pass does not have the same facets.
Is there a way to make the vray AO pass similar in smoothness to the Modo one?

The scene I used for the screen grabs is just a default sphere and cylinder (faces, not sub-d) and a plane

    Thanks

    Hey,

Thank you for the feedback. The reason for this event is that "Smoothing" option is always enabled (Mesh properties) and for now we do not support this feature. Meanwhile, to avoid this you can enable Subdivs or Use V-Ray Geometry properties -> Enable V-Ray Subdiv.

      Hi
Thanks for your quick reply and explanation

The work I am doing at the moment involves rendering out medium poly game assets. So enabling any subdivs changes the shape of the geometry too much.
Some parts of the models can be subdivided some can't.

I will try and use the modo AO pass for now and see how it goes

      Thanks again
      Simon

Do you have an OpenGL viewport open when you render with V-Ray ?
Sometimes Modo will give us non-smoothed normals, if there is no OpenGL viewport open.

          Hi Vladimir
Yes I do have an openGL viewport open.

This faceting is only in the AO output/ render element. The RGB colour output does look smooth.
Thats why I thought it strange that the AO is faceted while the RGB is smooth

          thanks
