  • Constantly crashing while rendering animations with GPU

    Hey there,

i have a 1500 Frame Animation and wanted to render them on the GPU. I have 2x 1080ti and 2x 980ti on Windows 10. Rendering Stillframes is flawless, but rendering animations results in a crash or an error 2.

What i noticed is that using the Progressive option is more stable than Adaptive. Using Adaptive the Problem occurs after ca. 10 Frames. With Progressive i was able to render 200 Frames in a row.

I also tried to render with Standalone. This results in the same problem. After n Frames the windows just disappears.

Is this a known Problem? Is there a Workaround/Driver suggestion etc.?

Also is there somewhere an errorLog which i can provide to you?

    Thanks in advance!

this is a new error. It seems there is a problem with memory. I wonder why it occurs after 100 Frames. BTW it's only a camera animation the objects don't change

Which GPU are you using for your monitor ?

The 980 Ti only has 6 GB of RAM, and if it's used for display, a big chunk of this will be taken by Windows, Modo or other 3D Apps.

You can try disabling both 980 Ti GPUs and check if this fixes the crash.

        Hey Vladimir,

first of all: Thank you for answering so quickly! I have the 980 Ti connected to the monitor so that is something i will try for sure. But i think this is strange behavior none the less. I think it's strange that the memory is enough for a few Frames but not for all of them, since nothing in the scene changes but the camera. Also i have the Hardwaremonitor running and the Ram seems to be barely occupied. Also the Standalone and even Modo in some cases crashes without any error notification. Its just gone. Is thats whats supposed to happen if there is not enough Ram?

And how do i know i have enough ram for an animation if testing single Frames work flawless?

        Thanks in advance!

          Hey,

Thank you for the post. Please check the drivers and clean the Nvidia cache. Sometimes this one helps. The second, thought is about the adaptive vs. progressive ---> What is the render resolution, if it is too high use Adaptive mode, this will spend RAM indeed. Is this crash happen when using hybrid rendering?

          Cheers,

I think it's strange that the memory is enough for a few Frames but not for all of them, since nothing in the scene changes but the camera.
By default, On-demand mipmapping is enabled when doing production (i.e. non-interactive/RT) rendering with the GPU.
This means that the textures in the scene will be loaded at a different resolution based on their distance to the camera.
So getting closer to an object with high res textures will load those textures and require more GPU RAM.

Also the Standalone and even Modo in some cases crashes without any error notification. Its just gone. Is thats whats supposed to happen if there is not enough Ram?
We would need a scene for that to investigate.
You can send it to support or Boyan and they will log an issue for the GPU team.
