  • RT GPU stops then won't run again

RT GPU is behaving oddly. With one scene it won't start at all. With another, I got it to start but then it just stops itself after a few seconds.

I have tried to pinpoint the issue and I can't seem to find anything that's causing it. I've checked the ocldevice app also.

Not sure what else to say other than RT GPU won't start. I'm using 901 sp2b0. 88716. Should I try a different build of modo or vray?

    Thanks for any help.

Can you send me those scenes ? My e-mail is vladimir.nedev [at] chaosgroup [dot] com.

The scene you sent me starts fine for me, but it is missing all texture maps, including the environment HDR.
I've seen a bug where RT GPU would crash with bigger environment maps (I was able to reproduce it just now with a 8000x4000 map for the background, one of the Smart IBL environments from MODO 901).
In these situations RT GPU is supposed to reduce the size of the map so it fits in GPU memory, but it seems something fails there.

Can you try disabling just the environment map and see if that fixes the problem ?
You can also open MODO's event log, since it doesn't crash, but just refuses to start, there might be something in there that tells you what is wrong.

We do not resize enev textures (so this is a feature, not a bug). We do that because usually they are important, but may be we have to reconsider that.

OK, it looks like things are working with a newer nightly build - 20150805. Sorry for the inconvenience. This does seem to have been happening over the beta, with GPU working with some builds and not others (?).
I did try turning the environment on/off, as well as a few other things. No difference.
BTW I'm using a Titan Black card on Win7.

Yes, RT GPU is in very active development, so it will probably break more often in the nightly builds.
Usually it's best to test with the latest build, when you have an issue like this, and also have a stable build that you go back to, when a newer build turns out to be buggy.

I would like to do further tests with RT GPU, is there a section somewhere of all currently known issues that I can read through for it?

There isn't a MODO specific list yet, but you can check the V-Ray for Maya one, it will give you an idea what is supported in the V-Ray RT GPU core:
                  http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...orted+Features

Also some other notable missing features in RT GPU which are V-Ray for MODO specific:
                  - bump mapping (need to check what's causing it not to work)
                  - gradient texture
                  - blending of texture layers in the shader tree
                  - stencil texture effect
