  • RT GPU - General

    1) CUDA device settings. For disabling certain cards or give priorities of low, med or high to each device or at least the primary device.

    2) Full RT GPU pause. It would also be a good addition to have a full Pause with GPU, not only for scene updates as there can be a lot of input lag while it runs.

I am not sure those are questions, but if they are
    1. We ship a tool named ocldeviceselect.exe with the V-Ray installation. You can use it to choose which GPUs should be used in V-Ray RT GPU (keep in mind you have to restart the host app in order those to take effect).
If you want to reduce the V-Ray RT GPU priority in order to reduce the OS UI lag, you have just to reduce the values of "Ray bundle size" / "Rays per pixel" from RT GPU settings until it is okay.

I dont think the ocldeviceselect.exe tool is included in modo yet.

Thanks, will make a point to check that.

Sorry Blagovest, I meant to title the thread differently "General Questions / Problems / Requests" as I wanted to add to the thread where I come up with a new problem etc. I realise it may be in the wrong forum topic. Sorry

Thanks for the tip UI lag, will try it. Is it possible to add a total pause to calculations (as in Octane) also to reduce lag when tweaking material settings, then enabling again to carry on where it left off without going through exporting geometry cache etc.? **EDIT: Actually adjusting "Ray bundle size" / "Rays per pixel" might just be ok for this will test more thanks!

No worries, I hope the UI lag gets much better with those settings.
For the pause - in theory the engine can do it I think, but neither of the host apps integration support that kind of pausing. I will add that as a feature request.

There is also a second kind of pause that we don't support yet - which is to stop render, save an image, and continue rendering later from the place you have stopped. This is already added as a feature request.

I started testing RT GPU for the first time now. I don't know it well so if I do something wrong...please let me know.

I find it not very unstable at the moment. If I do a preview of a room it will look right. then changing a light or something the ceiling will randomly just disappear out the preview.... then if I stop and restart the preview it works again.
Or, sometimes it will render fine in another camera...then suddenly just gray....restarting sometimes work...sometimes not. or, having a replicator tiled floor will sometimes show...sometimes not.
I know RT and GPU is a WIP...should we bug all the issues or just wait till you are done with the implementation of it?

RT GPU in general does not have all the features the CPU V-Ray has, but it has enough to be used in production, in pre-vis, etc. From what you say this seems like an issue with the integration in Modo.
It is still in beta, but I think it would help to the Modo team a lot if you explain in details when those happen or give sample scenes. Thanks !

problem is it is VERY random...I can't figure out why or when it happens. I will mail my scene to Vladimir...or should I send it to someone else?

I dont intend using it for final renders but it would be nice to have quick previews while I tweak the scenes

I am not sure which is the mail to contact for Modo beta bugs, I guess it is his.

In my experience it happens only with sub-d surfaces, so when working with RT GPU you should avoid them and it should work fine.

Thanks Jakub. I have a few sub-d surfaces in the scene... I will have a test it

You should send me the scenes you are having a problem with. Note that with RT GPU, you might be running into issues because you don't have enough GPU RAM.

I keep an eye on the event viewer. It does not go out of ram, unless this is not an accurate way to check?
I Will send you the scene, thanks Vladimir

This should be fixed in the nightly build from 2016.06.01 .
I had an optimization where replicated meshes with <= 30 triangles would be treated in a special way, which resulted in them not showing up in RT GPU.
