  • SSS from Modo material

    Hi,

not sure if thats a limitation, but it looks like Vray is not automatically taking the SSS settings from a Modo material. Is that correct and how to make it work?

Yes, the SSS part of the MODO material is not translated to V-Ray.
You can see what is supported here : http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...+Compatibility
I plan to do a little re-write of the MODO material support, might be able to add the SSS as part of that, but no promises.

The best way to have SSS with V-Ray would be to use the V-Ray Fast SSS2 material.

      Hi Nedev,

yeah that sound good. I guess Modo users are just used to easy and fast SSS while in Vray the setup was always a lot more complicated. Well I know Vray has some cool SSS features too.
My general problem is that you can do a lot with Modo standard material, so you don't need refraction in order to get SSS.
I agree about the fastSSS shader, but it doesn't support single sided Materials. I know thats a fake, but if you have leaves on a tree or thin paper its really helpful.
I often use SSS in Modo to give glass a dusty surface when it get lit behind. Very useful effect. And absolute not easy to setup in Vray. Especially as mapping SSS seem to not work correctly.
For example the 2sided material is basically a blend material, but it just blend two vray materials in Modo not two material groups. So if you have a leave with textures for defuse, specular etc., you have a problem. At least if you don't want to start with schematic.. but then I have no idea how.

In any case it would be useful to ship Vray with sample materials that cover such problems.

Can you give me an example scene of this. So I can test with it, if I eventually add support for MODO's SSS ?

An example scene will be helpful to check, if there is a problem with this.

There is an example scene of a 2-sided leaf material in this post by me : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...772#post651772

Thanks for the sample on 2-sided leaf material. That really solved it for me. The trick is to know the channel names and to connect what with what (Vray or Modo channels).

For the SSS, simple turn on modos SSS and add a gradient for the incident. So like fabric with its tiny hair the SSS is stronger on the incident. Work pretty simple in Modo and fast. The down point in Vray is you need refraction to make it work. So you need the the fast SSS shader in Vray, but then again its harder to setup and easily turns your translucent into red (I have no idea why).

So if you can set it up to work with Modos setting it would be very cool. My knowledge about proper Vray shading is limited, I forgotten to much, but also we live in 2016 and I think many people would like to have things simpler.
I seen in the Vray for Max build, you have build in presets. Would be fine having that for Modo too.
