  • DR Rendering crashes MODO 10.1

When trying to render a scene with DR, even if it's just a sphere, modo crashes. Event log is empty, no error messages on the clients. I disabled online-licensing and it rendered the sphere once. I thought i solved the problem, but after trying it on another scene, modo crashed again.

btw. is there a way to access more than just 4 slaves?

    Any suggestions?

Are you sure it's the DR that's causing the crash ?
What if you disable DR, does it render then ?

The only problem I can think of is not enough space in your temp folder, as that's where a .vrscene needs to be saved before DR can start.
I don't handle this case gracefully, so a crash might occur, I am not sure.

Can you show me a screen-shot of your global V-Ray preferences ?

Are you rendering an animation or a single frame ?

btw. is there a way to access more than just 4 slaves?
Just separate the server names with ';' like this : "10.0.0.12;10.0.0.226"
There are 4 separate lists, so you can separate your nodes in 4 groups and enable/disable all nodes in a group together.

It's only when trying to render with DR on. Without it works fine. I just found out, that after updating my slaves to Standalone "vraystd_adv_33004_x64_vc11_hwlic" even MAYA crashes when rendering with Distributed rendering on. Something that worked flawless before. To render with DR in V-Ray for MODO, you must use the V-Ray Standalone that comes with the V-Ray for MODO installation.
So basically install V-Ray for MODO on the slaves and run Launch V-Ray Render Slave from the V-Ray for MODO entry in the Start Menu.

The same applies to V-Ray for Maya, you must use the standalone from the V-Ray for Maya installation. The V-Ray for Maya installation allows you to install "Standalone only".

If you want to run the two on the same machine, so you can start DR from both V-Ray for Maya and MODO, you will have to start the slaves on different ports.
In this case, you start one of the two normally (V-Ray for Maya most likely, as it can be registered as a service, I haven't added this to V-Ray for MODO yet).
It will start on port 20207.

Then the other one is started by launching the V-Ray Command Prompt ( Tools -> V-Ray Standalone Command Prompt) and typing "vray.exe -server -portNumber=20208".
In the host application, you specify the slaves with a port number like this "10.0.0.226:20208"

I will see if I can reproduce the crash now that I know what you were doing. We need to fix it, but most likely it will then just give you an error that the V-Ray versions don't match.
