  • V-ray could not initialize UI license, error code is : -200

Getting this error when attempting to render with V-ray on a mac pro laptop (el capitan) using Modo 10.1 V2, dongle licensing system, and Vray build 34001.
Other identical machines can render with V-ray no problem. Verified the laptop that is failing has rights to access the license.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Nick

I think error -200 means that there was a problem when trying to establish a connection to the license server.
Can you run the V-Ray for MODO installation again on that machine and make sure that Remote V-Ray License Server on the Network is selected and the correct IP address is entered ?

Sharing the fix for this (Thanks Chaosgroup support!)

      In Terminal:
      cd /Applications/ChaosGroup/V-Ray/MODO_x64/bin
      ./setvrlservice -server=<yourserver> -port=<yourport>

May need to run as superuser - I did.

In my case the info was the same that I had entered during installation but redoing it this way fixed the error.

        Yikes! I just got this.

Love the render engine, but license errors are kind of freaking me out.

I'm actually a total networking numskull so I have no idea which port I'm supposed to use- and for my server do I want to use the name or the IP address?

This error and fixes should be in the docs IMHO, I can't find it here:

        https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...roubleshooting

Edit- I just uninstalled the license server software, and reinstalled it. I have no idea why it ever threw that -200 error...ugh.

So what causes this error? The only thing I changed was a nightly build update, and a swap out of a power supply, which AFAIK, shouldn't have any effect...right?

I'm not quite sure what caused this; we are still investigating.

If you have the V-Ray Online license server installed locally on the MAC it's possible for you to have problems with permissions since OSX 10.11 have some extra security measures built in and don't let you use the files in .ChaosGroup folder if they are owned by root user (which is by default since a root password is required for installation).

Could you please try to оpen a terminal on your MAC (Type in "terminal" in Finder), paste the following command and press "return" key:

              sudo chown -R YourCurrentUser /Users/YourCurrentUser/.ChaosGroup

where YourCurrentUser is the name of your current user (you can see it in the output of "whoami" command). You'll be prompted for your password.

After that reboot the MAC and after it boots up again paste and load in your web browser http://localhost:30304
You should see the license server's screen and you'll be presented with an option to log in with your credentials .

Unfortunately this didn't happen on my MAC but on a win10 box.

Are the steps mostly the same for the PC?

                  Hey GidPDX,

thank's for the posts. Nope, the commands "sudo chown -R YourCurrentUser /Users/YourCurrentUser/.ChaosGroup" are executable for UNIX (Mac or Linux). Ok, let's go to try something else. Download the latest build from here : https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...tlies/20160909. Extract the file. Go to folder. Right click over executable file chooses a "Run as administrator". Click over "I Agree" and on the next window "Customized". Change the type from Local to Remote V-Ray license server. Check the attached files for details. During installation has a complete check for errors.Reboot PC. Next Run http://localhost:30304/#/ and try V-Ray for MODO also. Please note : In case that you're able to install Vray for MAYA or Max please use the same way.

Thanks Boyan for the great break down. I'll use that next time I hit this error. I was able to get around it by just uninstalling and re-installing the license server application.

I'm getting this error as well. Finally got around to installing the latest release and hit this wall! It's very frustrating for everything to be working smoothly in the previous build only to be locked out of VRay after a simple upgrade. This is a problem I have to sort out asap.

Try reinstalling the V-Ray online license server.
When you installed the latest release, did you already have a running license server ? Did you install the license server from the .zip file of the new release ?

Did as others here have done. Uninstalled everything, rebooted, and then re-installed. Seems to be working now.

I currently get that after each time installing a new Version of V-Ray (nightly) and then restart or log off. Only thing helping is reinstall the server. I'm on OSX.

It's not necessary to restart the OS after installing V-Ray for MODO.

If you just restart your machine, do you get the same issue, or does it happen only after installing V-Ray for MODO ?
