Group mask not working

I read a couple of threads on group masking and not sure I understand the fix if there is any for modo's group mask effect. If I need to change it to a v-ray material which one is needed to get group masking?

You want to use the group mask texture effect with a V-Ray material or is it something else ?
I am not sure I understand, can you show an example ?

The group mask effect will work with V-Ray materials, but you need to combine materials of the same type.

My bad- this was an old project I wanted to serenader and the shader tree was messed up.
