    In MODOs render engine, you could tell it to use Monte Carlo on specific materials.

    Does anyone know if there is an equivalent way of achieving this in VRay?

    Yes, on the Shader item go to the V-Ray Object Properties tab and uncheck Use Irradiance Map.
