  • Environment with Matte Surface in shader

    Hi
I am having a problem when trying to set up a shadow catcher using the vray shader properties. But I am not sure if it is a vray shader properties problem or environment problem.
The problem is that the environment with "visible to camera" turned ON is reflecting in the sphere. It shouldn't, do this, it is set to be visible to the camera but not reflections.
This only happens when the FLoor shadow group is on. Thats why I think I have set it up wrong :/

I have set one environment with "visible to camera" ON, with all other environment attributes turned off.
With the second environment I have set "visible to camera" OFF.
I have set each environment to a very bright red and green to see the problem clearly.

With the Floor shadow material group turned OFF, the scene renders as expected, the green environment is not visible in the sphere.
With the Floor shadow material group turned ON the green environment reflects in the sphere, even though it should only be visible to the camera.

I have set up the attached scene as an example. I am sure I have done this before and it has worked fine, so I may have just missed something this time around.

EDIT: Sorry I cant see how to attach a file or a link
Here is the dropbox link to the file

    Thanks
    Simon

The two images attached are actually the same red and green when viewed in Photoshop, nit sure why they look so different when uploaded

This is the result using the modo renderer, which is what I was expecting.
So I think it is a problem with how I have set up the vay object properties.

Sorry again as I have made this seem more complicated than it is.

EDIT: added another example. Modo renderer at the top, vray at the bottom, you can see in the modo version that the environment set to "visible to camera" is not reflecting.
In the Vray version the floor is reflecting red.

    thanks agian

      HI there.

      I tried out your scene.

I made a few tweaks to your scene.

I've changed the shader on the shadow catcher, I've highlighted in a few screenshots, and circled the areas to tweak in red. Hope this helps.
I'm still really new to v-ray, so not positive this is the correct way to do it.
But I think v-ray doesn't understand the shadow catcher concept the same way modo does. So you just gotta tweak it a bit.

I also tweaked your material, for some reason the reflective shader wasn't working right, so I just created a new one and assigned your sphere to it.

I've also included the scene here:

        Hey
Thats great , thanks for taking a look!
It really just didn't occur to me to just turn off the "visible to reflection rays" in the shader. I think because it seemed to work in the Modo renderer I expected it to work in Vray too.

Yep the material was set up wrong, too I had just made it quickly to get my point across.

        Thanks again for your help

          Hey Pixelsim,

Thank you for the post. I would like to share my workflow for shadow catcher with V-Ray and one more from Funk : https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...er-eis-problem.

          Cheers,

            Hey Boyan

Thanks for posting that, I did search the forums to try and find a solution, but obviously missed that post!

            Thanks for pointing it out
