  • Denoiser crash

I've been having a lot of crashes which I think are due to the Denoiser. I've been experimenting with a new workflow for me using Progressive sampler with Denoiser set to default settings. If I disable Denoiser the render will always complete but often crashes with Denoiser enabled. Sometimes if I make a test with lower pixel resolution the render will complete. I've tried with Denoiser set to Mild without any improvement.
Iam using the latest Nightly build but get the same crashes with the Release build.
    I'm running Modo 10.2.4 on a i7 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.11.6.
I also get crashes rendering with V-ray Standalone.

    Hey, Nick

Thank you for the feedback.A possible workaround is to Set "0" to "Image effect freq. option". You can find this option in the V-Ray Main tab.If this step is not helping you, please provide us more details about how did you recreate the behavior.

    Cheers

      Hi Boyan,

I'm still getting a crash even if I set image effect freq. to 0. I'm trying to render a file at over 4000 pixels width. If I set the width to 200 pixels I don't get a crash. If I disable Denoiser I don't get a crash.
Also I've tried rendering from the same file in Modo 10.2.4 In Windows 7 Pro on the same Macbook Pro running Windows in Bootcamp. I don't get a crash in this situation.
I hope you can help because the Progressive + Denoiser combination gives good render times.

      Cheers,

      Nick

        Hey, Nick

Well, This might be a GPU issue as you've tried to render a high-resolution image on MAC. What is the GPU model?

Another solution for the certain situation is to use standalone denoise tool :
        1. Go to V-Ray menu -> chose to Render with V-Ray
        2. Save the file as vrimg.
        3. Next check file path for tool here: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...l+%7C+vdenoise
        4. Run the Tool - copy/paste command line vdenoise -inputFile="path\to\vrimg_File"
        5. Check the result

Can you provide us a scene file?

        Cheers,

          Hi Boyan,
Thanks for that suggestion. I tried rendering saving as vrimg but it crashed at the end. I had Denoiser enabled, as suggested in the Docs.
My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB.
I did a test with Region Render covering half the 4K VFB window which rendered ok, then rendered the other half of the image which rendered ok.
What steps can I take to reduce RAM use, if that os part of the problem?

          Cheers,

          Nick

            Hey, Nick

Thank you for the posts. Change the resolution as adding a few more pixels (e.g 4005 px x ... ) and change the Dynamic memory limit to = -2048. (~2GB) or by your personal choice.

Hope, this going to helping you.

            Cheers,

              Hi Boyan,
I've set Dynamic memory limit to 14.0Gb (I have 16Gb RAM). I can render an image 2800 pixels wide but when I tried 3200 pixels wide Modo crashed just at the end of Demonising (at 100%).
Is there anything else I can check?

              Cheers,

              Nick

                Hi Boyan,
I've had success rendering at higher resolutions by lowering Dynamic memory limit. I did this in small steps until Vray stopped crashing. Thanks for your help.

                Cheers,

                Nick

                  Hi Boyan,
I'm still having crash issues with the Denoiser feature. How can I send you a test file?

                    Hey, Nick

Thank you for the feedback. Well, use https://wetransfer.com/ it might be a large file at all.

                    Cheers

                          Hey, Nick.

I think this might be good chance to add information about rendering high-resolution images at all.

                          1. When we dealing with high-resolution images switch the image sampler Type to Adaptive it is less memory consuming.

                          2. Add negative value to Dynamic memory option for example "-2048"

                          3. Use "Render with V-Ray" option from V-Ray tab

                          4. Export or Save as " vrimg " file format and use it later with additional tools such as "Denoiser" or "VRimg2EXR"

                          Cheers,

                            Hi Boyan,
I will try with these settings, they are similar to what I was using previously. I tried Prog + Denoiser rather than this type because I could get a good result in about 40% of the render time.
Have you got any more help for using the Denoiser tool with a bring file? is it possible to do this on a Mac?

                            Thanks,

                            Nick

                              Hey, Nick

Add settings (third image) to Adaptive image sampler, in V-Ray GI add -> IR - set it to Medium | LC - set to 500 bounces. I think the result will have rendered for less time. If you want to clean the result more increase the Max. Subdivs to 8-12 and render it.

                              Cheers,

BTW, I was rendered successfully yesterday with Progressive image sampler and Denoiser and Dynamic memory set to "-2048" on WIN 10.
