I have been running into this random hang quite regularly. This scene seems to reproduce it quite often on my machine
NOTE: Before doing this, clear the windows FTH. When modo crashes often, windows will put it into an FTH "black list". I have a feeling that having modo in the FTH list prevents the hang from happening.
MODO 11.2 462766 (happens in 11.1v1 too)
V-Ray 3.52.01 27665
1. To clear the FTH, in an admin command prompt (start > command prompt > run as admin) type
Rundll32.exe fthsvc.dll,FthSysprepSpecialize
2. Start modo and go to the "render v-ray" layout
3. Load scene and start RT CPU
4. Select shader tree > ear_phone_tip > cloudy plastic 2 > v-ray fast sss2
5. Click the "sub surface color" to open the color picker, then drag the large value slider (under the color wheel) SLOWLY, left to right to left etc repeatedly. eg. Go all the way from black to white and back
RESULT: After a while of dragging this color, modo hangs
