  • Vray not recognized by Modo

I've installed Vray, with the license being on a remote server accessed via VPN.
The license is recognized and Vray installs, but upon opening Modo, it doesn't show up.

If I uninstall Modo and re-install it, Vray does show up -- but only on the first run!!!

If I close Modo and reopen, Vray is not available anymore.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've scoured for answers but could not find anything that comes remotely close to this. Very frustrating.
    Thanks!

    That's very strange indeed.
Are you installing V-Ray for MODO and then running MODO under the same user ?
Are you on Windows or macOS ?
Are you doing anything special with MODO's configuration files when MODO is being closed ?
Which version of MODO are you running ?

      Hi Vladimir,
      Thank you for your response.
      I am on Windows 10x64.
Modo version 11v1. Not touching the configuration files at all.

Both Modo and Vray are educational licenses. Both are being accessed through a VPN directly into the college's network. Each license sits on different license server due to setups that cannot be reconfigured at the moment.

It is odd that upon a fresh installation of Modo, Vray is recognized, but upon closing and re-opening, it doesn't do so anymore. Is there a specific configuration that is initially being read, and then overwritten?
Is Vray assigned to a specific user as opposed to a domain?
I'm testing this out, since we are supposed to be rolling out the licenses to our students.
On another note, Vray for Maya was installed on the same machine, and it worked. The main difference is that the Maya license was local and not accessed through VPN, as is the Modo one.

Please let me know if you require additional information. I can provide you that through PM or email if you prefer.
      Thank you.

Can you clarify what you mean by "Vray is not available anymore" ? Is V-Ray missing from the MODO menus completely or is it just the license that's not working, i.e. you get a license error ?

V-Ray for MODO stores a .cfg file in %appdata%\Luxology\Configs called vray4modo.cfg. The installation creates this file only for the current user. If the file is missing, V-Ray for MODO won't load into MODO.

It's not a problem for the licenses of MODO and V-Ray for MODO to be on different servers or to be accessed through a VPN.
