  • RT GPU DoF

Can't seem to get the DoF working on the latest nightly.
Is this a bug fix, or feature issue? Works with RT CPU, and buckets.

I've also tried it on one of the Quickstart scenes...

    Thanks,

    Nick

It's not implemented for a standard camera for GPU.
You have to use the V-Ray Physical Camera.
There is an option to disable the Exposure correction from the physical camera if that's something you don't want to deal with.

      Hi Vladimir,

I'm using the Physical camera, and it's active.
Changing f-stop does effect exposure for example, but I'm not getting any actual DoF in the viewer.

It works in RT CPU on my system...

      Best,

      Nick

        Hey, Nick

Thank you for the post. Yes, that's correct the camera's effect DOF is not being rendered by RT GPU on MAC. This is the core issue, so I think within next merge this going to be fixed. Keep you posted about it!

        Cheers,
The workaround, for now, is to use DR with Windows machine without to use local MAC. BTW, this might be the best way to bypass some of the behaviors on MAC with GPU.

          Thanks Boyan, any updates?

Also, how would we render animation with RT GPU? Will it always be via V-Ray standalone, or can we do it within Modo?

          Best,

          Nick

            Hey, Nick

The behavior is existing and we're working on it. About the animation, you can use the command for Render Animation which is located in V-Ray Menu. You can assign a key to it if you want.

            Cheers,

For now it's only through V-Ray Standalone.

              Thanks Boyan, any updates?
You might have to wait for V-Ray Next to come to Modo for that fix, as it's possible that the fix breaks the V-Ray API, and we can't do that on point releases.

Yep, Nick sorry I thought that you've noticed render an animation, not specific RT GPU. There is no option for rendering with RT GPU in V-Ray menu at all.

                  Ok, thanks guys.

This is probably a good time to look at post-render DoF workflows in compositing.
RT GPU looks great, looking forward to future builds...

                  Nick

                    Hello,

yes, today I come through the same problem and I wrote a private message to Vladimir thinking was a bug. I hope that the DOF in Vray for Modo on Mac Os will be fixed, is a feature where I notice sometimes very benifical to render on GPU vs CPU,

                    Thanks,

                    Alessandro

Yep, it's a massive 'bump in the road' for RT GPU in Modo at the moment.
Been looking at post DoF in Fusion9, and will try out the frischluft plugin soon....

I couldn't merge the original fix for this from our master branch to the 3.6 stable branch, since it breaks the V-Ray ABI.

So, I reworked it and the new version should be in the 2018.03.07 nightly build.
I have tested it only on Windows though, so you should give it a try to confirm it works.

Hi Vladimir, thanks for looking into this.
                          Really appreciated.

DoF works now, but the render looks odd.
I also don't think the scene is actually reaching the GPU? My CPU activity is basically the same for either attachment.

Cuda options have also disappeared on the preference window.

                          Best,

                          Nick

Sorry, I completely broke the macOS builds for the GPU renderer, it's indeed not rendering on GPU at all.

I will run the builds again and let you know when there is a working version you can test.
Should be in about an hour hopefully.

The new build in the 20180307 folder (the one ending on 28103 ) should be working properly. Give it a try.
