  • out of memory...

I like rendering out of RT in standalone, because of the speed. But I'm constantly getting out of memory error. I have a 1070, 760 and 780 ti. resize textures is on (set to 512). on-demand mipmapping is on. rendering at HD or lower. almost every other render fails, right after a reboot, and animations fail in the first frame, or shortly after, often.

    what am I doing wrong?

The scene needs to fit in the GPU memory of each card individually. Memory between GPUs cannot be shared ( unless you have nvLink, but that's for newer cards).
So, maybe try disabling the GPU with the least amount of RAM.

Does that mean I don't get the advantage of having multiple cards? Is the Lowest denominator choking VRay?

would I need to have 3 cards, each of the same memory size? Do I need to get higher memory cards (might be obvious... more memory = better)

You get the advantage of faster rendering with more cards. But the scene needs to fit in the RAM of each one of them.
You can try rendering only with the 1070 and see if that fixes the out of memory errors.
