  • Render quality settings.

    Attached is my first render after a week or so of learning some basics for VRay. I still have some issues I am not sure how to begin resolving. Some problem areas:

    1. Antiailising of the island light fixture is really bad, as is the bottom edge of the skylights. Seems like brightness near these areas plays a factor.
    2. I have the polygons for the light bulbs on the hanging light separated out into their own layer. I hoped to use these as a mesh light. I only found that the VRay Light settings offer a mesh to load if you use a Portal light. (Seems like that is an error and you should use a Mesh light for this feature to be available). How can I get this lamp to behave as a mesh light?
    3. Related to 2, Do I also need to have a material on the bulbs to give off a glowing surface? Or can I make this work just was well by using the polygon material to light the space rather than a mesh light or a bunch of tube lights? Currently, the countertop below doesn't even look like it is getting lit right.
    4. Finally, this image to 10 hours to render on a 12core mac pro with 64GB ram. I think i have have gone way overboard on my settings or something. Does anything jump out ???
    5. Why Max render time set to 1 minute by default?
    6. How do you control number of bounces in the production render? I only see a bounce term used under RT.

    It would be great if someone could look into my scene and let me know if I have some big problems. Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hey, Daniel,

    Thank you for the feedback,

    About AA problem - the solution was added here: https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...asing-geometry

    About the Rendering time and quality - 1. You can increase the image sampler - threshold value from 0.005 to 0.01 || 2. I highly recommend you to use Area Light to tubes instead of polygon material to light. || 3. Replace the portals with area light as well.

    About the MAX Rendering Time - When you are using "Progressive" for final rendering you can change this to the desired rendering time. If you set this to 0.0 sec/ render time will depend on the threshold value.

    No need to change bounces like Modo

    Basically - V-Ray for Modo is easy to use, in most case scenarios you should choose//change || 1. Image Sampler type (Progressive or Adaptive) 1.1 Image Sampler Threshold - 0.01 - 0.008. || 2. Enable Denoiser || V-Ray GI - Brute Force to Irradiance Map.

      A few quick notes:
      - you should NOT change the DMC sampler settings (like in your screen), you can mess up a lot, if you don't understand what you are doing;
      - you have switched the Light Evaluation Mode to Full Evaluation, depending on the scene this could be much much slower than Adaptive Lights (the default);
      - using mesh lights instead of self-illuminated materials will probably be faster;

      5. Why Max render time set to 1 minute by default?
      It's setup for a quick preview. You can open a new scene, change the max time, save the scene and then use it as your default scene, if you don't like this default.
