  • Fast SSS2 problem

I am having a problem where the inside of these flowers are rendering black. I do have the VRay material set to "back side material is same as front." Any tips?

    Thank you.

If the geo is thin (ie, no thickness) then you need a 2sided material.
SSS will not work without a watertight (or close enough to) mesh.

I use translucency for leaves and blossoms, works fine. You just double the diffuse map and make it a bit brighter as translucency map. But you have to take care about the normals, try to switch them to the other side if that looks better, its easier for leaves where the normals just have to point up. Translucency is hard (wax) and doublesided is off.

I wondered about using Translucency. but if double sided is off, wont you not see about 1/2 of the leaves on the tree?

No, there is another setting "back side same as front side" or something like that in the 3rd vray material tab (where bump and displacement settings are). Give it a try, renders much faster than 2sided and is easier to setup.

By default, the 2Sided material will show the front shader through, depending on the amount of translucency set.
There is normally no need to add a second shader, unless you're seeing the leaves up close, and would like to see the different underside, if present (not all leaves look much different on either side, but some do.).
