  • Missing material editor

I installed vray for Revit 2020 and there is no material editor. Nowhere on my hard drive is vraymateditor.exe nor is there a button on the vray ribbon in Revit. I think I can talk my boss into buying it but we need to edit materials obviously! If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Wayne

      Hi Wayne,

The material editor is not standalone anymore, meaning that you can access it from within the V-Ray toolbar in Revit. We've changed the entire material workflow in version Next, allowing for a seamless material experience in V-Ray for Revit, SketchUp & Rhino.
You can have a look at the documentation here: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VN4R/Asset+Editor

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Best,

Thanks so much. I'm getting the hang of setting up materials in vray for revit. Big problem now is Revit taking forever to load since installing vray. I've been waiting more than 10 minutes right now. This will have to be solved in order for my boss to sign off on purchasing a license. Ideas?

        Thanks

        Wayne

Ok it seems to happen after a windows reboot. Maybe vray needs time to connect to the online trial license before trying to load Revit. Speaking of licenses, I assume the dongle can be on our server and it will be first come first serve among our users if we purchase one?

Wayne, we use an online license server, meaning that you don't need any dongles. First come, first serve is not a workable solution in bigger architecture offices. That's why we have the ON/OFF (Acquire License) button. You can install V-Ray on all machines and then only those users that need it can turn it on.

As for the hang you experienced, right now there is a known issue in that regard and we'll be launching a hotfix for it very soon. If you can let me know how big is your project and how many materials does it contain, I can confirm if it's the same issue.

The revit file is about 200mb and there's currently 15 vray materials. I get that everything gets compared to 3dsmax, but editing materials in Revit is, though capable, extremely cumbersome. Also having vray materials not show their diffuse maps in the shaded viewports is disappointing yet understandable (given the material substitution scheme that worls well). It would be awesome to have a dedicated shaded vray viewport that show's diffuse maps and accurate representation of proxies.

Unfortunately, Revit limits us in that regard. We're working on a solution though.
