  • GUI license usage

    Hello,

I was wondering how and when the GUI node is engaged in VRay for Revit?

The firm I work at is looking at purchasing some licenses but most architects here do a little rendering every now and then and use Revit almost constantly. We are wondering if the GUI nodes will be engaged on Revit startup. We obviously wouldn't want to uninstall the plugin to avoid engaging a GUI node just while doing standard Revit work.

    Thanks!
    Daniel

Yes - V-Ray for Revit engages the GUI license on startup.

You don't need to uninstall V-Ray - an easy work around would be to enter/remove the correct license settings only on the computer/s that will need V-Ray for the certain period of time.

If you disable V-Ray for Revit by changing the license settings, will they still be able to use other V-Ray products on their workstation such as V-Ray for SketchUp?

No, unless V-Ray for Revit is on another license server (added as an alternate license server).
There will be a build for V-Ray for Revit released in the beginning of January 2017 that will have a button for License release added, so that will simplify the license setup.

I think the Rhino model should be adopted for both Revit and SketchUp.
              1. Get license when you INVOKE vray. not at Revit Startup. Really we cannot install this plugin on machines for everyone to use.
              2. It slows down the Revit Startup looking for a license. if someone is using it then Revit Hangs with a VRAY NAG , VERY VERY unproductive.
              3. I am previewing this product and really am not happy with this current issue. There are many other products that acquire license when invoked and not at startup. http://www.revolutiondesign.biz if a single person can implement this, why cannot Chaosgroup?

              PLEASE FIX this issue!

Ggbn_architects_1, are you using the updated 340.02 version of V-Ray for Revit?
What you explained happens only when you load V-Ray for the first time. Then you have the option to disable it and it will remain disabled until you decide to enable it.

Hi, we're testing Vray for Revit at the moment. And came across this issue too.
We have over 30 Revit licenses. At the moment Vray installed at 3 Revit seats having 2 licenses.
In production environment all seats will have Vray installed.

Starting the third Revit, with both Vray licenses used, it will crash/stall. Because it's looking for a license at localhost. While we're using a license server.
Starting the third Revit, and released Vray before, it will load. Then acquiring the license will have a popup saying no license is available. Next localhost is poping up in the browser, why?

Acquiring the license won't be a problem. But releasing it.. I'm sure people will forget. Revit will crash/stall the next time if the license is already acquired.
So this is a bad idea.
Maybe it's an idea to let Vray release the license as soon as Revit is closed. So you will always need to acquire the license if Vray is needed.

At this moment the floating license will sink..

                  Thanks,
                  Mark

Make sure you're using the latest V-Ray for revit build - https://download.chaosgroup.com/down...nd17-34002-adv
Once installed - when you start Revit you can release V-Ray license from "V-Ray" tab->Online Help->Release license
When you release it the license won't be engaged again even after Revit restart untill you engage it manually again.
For the license settings - you can point V-Ray to obtain license from the computer with v-Ray license server installed - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ServerSettings

Also - V-Ray license is released when Revit is closed.

I did some further testing. Also installed the latest releases "V-Ray 3.40.02 ADV" and "License Server 4.3.1 ADV".

The license itself is released by closing Revit. But the [License] Enabled=true remains in VRay4Revit.ini in the user roaming profile.
So next time I start Revit the license is taken again.
To release the license (Enabled=false) I have to close Revit, open it again and release it and close Revit again.

Having about 50 Revit users, and for each user Revit 2014, 2015 ,2016 and 2017 installed.
That would mean keeping 200 Revits up to date regarding the Vray License Enabled status.

                      That will fail, for sure.

Closing Revit should also set [License] Enabled=false in the VRay4Revit.ini

We are seeing the same issue:
                        - installed V-Ray for Revit (latest build released Jan 11, 2017) with the latest V-Ray Online Licensing
                        - when we launch Revit, the license server status shows a V-Ray license is engaged.
                        - we *can* choose to Release and Acquire the license as needed, which the functionality works fine, but we can not depend on our users to click "Release License" when time they launch Revit, or each time they won't need to use V-Ray after they have Acquired a license before. This will be a problem and will cause many calls to the Help Desk.

Another commenter mentioned the V-Ray for Rhino license model, where the VRay license does not become engaged unless the user is *actively* using V-Ray. I would like to second that request. Having to wait when launching Revit first for the Autodesk license, and then the V-Ray license will cause problems for our end users. Additionally, having V-Ray licenses engaged by Revit users who are not actually using V-Ray will cause problems for our 3D team members. In light of this we will likely limit who we install V-Ray for Revit at present.

Hopefully the Rhino model can be adopted for V-Ray for Revit, as I do not see the current model going over well with our in-house project teams.

Thanks for listening and hopefully this can be resolved!

                        Best,
                        Valerie

                          Ivan,

This is a burden to the user: he gets the responsability of disabling V-Ray for his coworkers, which is not a good way to go. I also would vote for the V-Ray (node) license only being looked for upon invoking of a render.

                          Thanks, Orlando
