  • Stock VRMat Material are very grainy

In other versions of Vray, there is "Sub Div" to control the fineness/grainy of material, but i had trouble finding the similar setting to fine tune the material for revit.

I downloaded the test scene and override the metal with the stock metal VRMat (Chrome and Metal Satin) files that come from Vray for Revit, with highest setting. They still look very grainy with highest setting and resolution. This also happens on other scene with other materials. If there a way to control that? Thanks!

    c7a-sliang,

The subdivision workflow is something that we are moving away from, and is only available in some of the other software packages such as 3ds Max by enabling the "Use local subdivs" option.

Have you tried using the denoiser?

      Thank you Ben,

It did make a difference but it also doubled the rendering time.

I think it might have to do with lighting, or maybe just me being too picky.

I would say play around with the settings a bit with the denoiser. If you have a decent graphics card, the 'use gpu' function can drastically improve your time. Which quality preset are you using?

Also, areas with low direct light can be prone to having a little noise.

My office purchased 1 license and 5 nodes, i rendered it with "the farm" not the GPU. I used the highest preset for render. Maybe i should try to render it locally with my GPU. I have NVDIA GeForce GTX 960.

Oh no, i mean GPU in the option for denoiser:

You can still render using your cpu and 5 nodes, but the gpu will be used to calculate the denoiser pass.

I still see some noise in your render. When you use the denoiser with the default settings you need to switch to the denoiser channel (in the frame buffer) to see the results after the denoiser. Here is a render I just did:

I am using medium quality. I played around with some settings and it looks like the denoiser does not work properly with progressive at the moment, which is a bug. Switch your engine settings to buckets and try rendering again. Buckets is also much faster and more efficient when using swarm, and I would recommend switching to buckets whenever you are doing your final render.
