  • Swarm Questions

Vray for 3dsMax user here, investigating adding 3.0 to our Revit and SketchUp toolboxes. We got some trial licenses for both setup today. I need to better understand how Swarm is working (or supposed to).

Looks like the Swarm installer is built-in to the Revit & SU installers, but it is different versions. Revit appears to be Swarm 1.2 where SU is 1.3.4.

Is it the same Swarm between the two, ie can I just install 1.3.4 once from the SketchUp installer and it’ll work with Revit too (for render nodes without either host application)?

Autodiscovery doesn’t appear to be working on our network configuration, the swarm config page requires IP address –(sidenote: no chance for a hostname lookup)? Right now the only way I’ve been able to get multiple machines to show up in the localhost:24267 screen (regardless of which machine I try) is to manually specify a primary master node IP address. Any suggestions?

V-Ray 3.4 for Sketchup installer comes with a newer version of V-Ray Swarm - 1.3.4. However you can install the latest V-Ray Swarm version (1.3.4) on the render nodes and will be able to submit jobs from both Revit and Sketchup applications with V-Ray 3.4 installed.

Currently we do not support hostname in master node field only IP address.
Regarding the issue with the auto discovery option, would you please provide more details on your network set up. Are all machines in the same subnet ?
You can send us the details directly at support@chaosgroup.com

Not on same subnet, have a variety of machines at various locations both on campus and housed offsite at a datacenter. A few of the ones housed next to eachother (assuming same subnet) see each other with auto, but then machines at other locations do not. I'm guessing we should just identify a single machine (license manager, backburner manager, etc.) and use that as primary, but the IP only point raises an issue there. They're largely static but not necessarily a guarantee, and if it would change then i'd need to go through and change the settings on 30+ nodes?

I'm just not sure that the "it just works" mentality is realistic for some firms, so we're going to need a bit more insight than what I've been able to find on the docs. What are the differences between multicast and broadcast, etc. Are you going to offer the swarm installer standalone?
