  • VRAY NEXT for Rhino: Assign Vray Material to Layer?!

Anyone else have this problem with the new Vray 4.0 / Vray NEXT?

Previously i could assign Vray materials BY LAYER in two ways:

    1. The V-Ray Asset Editor's Material list Right-click > Apply to Layer

    2. Through the Rhino Layer Material panel by enabling "Use plug-in: V-Ray for Rhino" and browsing the materials dropdown list.

OPTION 2, which I use most frequently, is no longer available? I no longer see "Use plug-in: V-Ray for Rhino". There is no box to tick!

Please help! Anyone else have this problem with the new Vray?

    Hello,
With V-Ray Next our developers made sure V-Ray is compatible with the new material assignment functionality in Rhino 6. As a result, the "Use Plug-in: V-Ray for Rhino" option is no longer available.
We do not intend on attempting to bring back this exact functionality. Having said that, any ideas you can share on the improvement of direct material assignment from V-Ray to Rhino layers would be greatly appreciated!

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Ok, this is a real workflow issue now. Why was this option removed?! Please bring it back!

        Hi toniboni,

In Rhino 6 + V-Ray Next, I can normally click layer Material slot and choose the V-Ray material directly from the list, with no need for clicking the plug-in button, so imo it works better now than it used to before.

        Cheers

Ooops, sorry for shouting. Thanks for the help, Jonish!

So I found out, that this option unfortunately does not really work. You can only select a material from the rhino drop down if it has already been used before. And even then, all of the materials assigned to alayer via direct dropdown from rhino are all rendered black. This is not a new feature, it's a bug actually and it is pretty annoying that I have paid for this loss in workflow functionality.

I have the same experience of toniboni: a material selected from the list is not rendering correctly, even if it is suppose to be a vray material. It seems that it overrides as a rhino material. And the workflow of assigning material became a little less straightforward.

I am having similar experiences. My work around, so far, is to select the object and then assign the Vray material to it via Vray's asset editor. Sometimes, when clicking to assign a material via the Rhino layers panel > material slot, doing so restores the version 3.6 layer selection interface (which makes it clear whether you are selecting a plug-in (Vray) or a Rhino material).

The blur between Rhino and Vray materials, textures, environments, etc. is confusing and the results, are inconsistent. To minimize bug making variables, I'd like to see Vray minimize or eliminate sharing settings panels with Rhino. Personally, I like to be clear whether a setting/variable belongs to Vray or Rhino.

                  Hi guys,
I just want to clarify things a little here:

                  1. The V-Ray materials were never supposed to appear in the Rhino materials list (and they don't in Rhino 5...).
In Rhino 6 this happens if a V-Ray material is applied to a Rhino layer (via the Asset Editor).
This is actually an issue that we're looking into right now.
So far it looks like a Rhino 6 behavior that we'll have to work around.
Note: The V-Ray materials that have appeared in the Rhino list should not be applied to layers from the layer material select menu - this could potentially cause problems!

                  2. The preferred workflow is to only apply materials to layers in the Asset Editor.
It can be done in 2 ways:
                  - Selecting the layer name from the drop-down menu
                  - Changing the Current Layer in Rhino and using the Asset Editor 'Apply to Layer / Active Layer' function

We are currently looking into ways to improve the workflow as a whole.
I'll update you on the progress and any possible workflow changes that might occur.

                  Regards,
                  Konstantin

                    Hi Konstantin,

That reminds me a super-annoying bug: Have you noticed that roughness / normal / ... textures keep reverting from Linear to sRGB after Rhino is closed?

This issue has already been brought to our attention and will be fixed in the upcoming v4.00.02.

                      Kind regards,
                      Peter

When I changed from v4.00.0? to v4.00.02 all the Vray materials once again appeared in the Rhino 6 materials lists. When going to v4.00 I tried using them and corrupted the file. It would be nice if a warning popup was introduced until the issue is fixed, since I am probably not the only person to assume that populating the Rhino materials list was intentional and then tried to use those materials, creating problems. Also, the problem persists after the initial software upgrade.
