  • Installation for Rhino 7 kills previous Rhino 6 installation

    Hi,

I tried to install Update 2 for Rhino 7 only, but if I start Rhino 6 now, than I get the message that SR23 is needed for using V-Ray. So, it looks like it's not possible to keep Update 1 for Rhino 6. Is this right? If yes, it could be nice if this would be noted at the installation UI.

    Hi Micha,

V-Ray for Rhino can have only one active installation at any time for all Rhino versions. This is because the installation files are shared for all Rhino versions.
Basically what happens during install is to remove the previous installation files, copy the new ones, and then register the .rhp file with the selected Rhino versions.

However if you want to have the above situation on purpose, you need to manually register the .rhp with Rhino
    Here is a small guide:

    0. USE THAT ON YOUR OWN RISK !
    1. Install V-Ray for Rhino 4.10.02
    2. Rename the installation directory C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\V-Ray for Rhinoceros to something appropriate for example C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\41002
    3. Install V-Ray for Rhino 4.20.01. The uninstall step of the installer will fail, safe to ignore
    4. Rename the installation directory C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\V-Ray for Rhinoceros to something appropriate for example C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\42001
    5. Open Rhino 6, go to Tools->Plugins, and click "Install", point to C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\41002\V6\VRayForRhino.rhp
    6. Open Rhino 7, go to Tools->Plugins, and click "Install", point to C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\42001\V7\VRayForRhino.rhp

Now, you have the setup you wished. However the uninstaller will fail to uninstall V-Ray, as the installer will always spit the error in step 2. You will need to manually delete C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\<path> directory and perform a clean install to fix the mess
We have a small tool to maintain multiple versions and switch between them, the mess you'd create will still be a mess but it would pretty safe.
