  • Material ID render element disabled by default?

    Hi,

I'm currently using the latest vray for rhino 4.20.02

From what I can remember from the previous versions, the Material ID layer was alway 'on' by default. I wonder why you left it disabled now, especially for the materials in the vray library.
This is not a problem usually, but when you use a lot of materials from the library like I do, I find having to remind myself to turn on something that was always 'on' before.

    Thanks again

    +1

Maybe a configuration option could allow to enable the material ID for new created/imported materials like it was working in the past.

      Hi,

There is now a better way to generate random colors based on material assignments - with the Material Random Color element.
The material ID attribute is actually a shading effect that slows down the rendering calculations (a little bit but still).
That's why we implemented this new element in V-Ray Core that does a similar thing without any shader modifications.
It is similar to Cryptomatte but outputs an 8bit image, works in interactive and on GPU.

      Hope that helps,
      Konstantin

        Hi konstantin_chaos

I like that the user can control the colors of the material ID and it's so easy to use (my client like to get a single color mask). I miss a way to set the colors for the Material Random Colors, for example I like to set some materials at the same color or I set some materials black. Or if I need to render mask through glass than I set the Mat ID color of the glass to an useful grey value so that the colors behind are good visible.

Sidenote: I miss to generate color mask through glass in GPU mode. Also the Material Random Color doesn't work. Doe's cryptomatte support masks through glass in GPU mode?

Material masks as seen through refractive objects are currently not supported on GPU. The workaround here would be to do a fast CPU render of the same shot by disabling all lights (Render Parameters > Switches > Lights) and use the generated render elements to compliment your GPU render output.

          Kind regards,
