  • Attention: Purge deletes used materials from the scene

The last days I worked on a complex train interior, changed the geometry at a lot of places and I have overseen that _purge still doesn't work stable. Now, I have an updated model, but 80% of the materials are gone.

This bug should be really quick fixed, it can cost a lot of time of additional work.

I had a similar issue two weeks ago.
Lost a bunch of materials and I am almost certain it was after a purge. I just found out when the renders were done (because my asset browser was a mess because of that issue of vray duplicating materials every time I opened the model). Luckily I had a backup.

I've seen it here as well ... too many times lately!

One clue is that I will sometimes copy and paste geometry. This has NEVER made a duplicate material, but may be part of the current issue.

        Thank you for reporting this!
I've just run a series of tests on a set of various projects hoping to reproduce what you've described but had no luck.
Could you please answer a few question that can help in pinpointing the cause of this faulty behavior?
        1. What is the version number of Rhino and V-Ray for Rhino you use?
        2. Are the incorrectly removed materials V-Ray or Rhino ones (or both)?
        3. Are the incorrectly removed materials applied only to proxies or V-Ray special objects?
        4. Are the incorrectly removed materials using opacity maps?
        5. Do the scenes that exhibit this bug contain proxies that have been copied over from other scenes?
If you've noticed the problem occurs multiple times with a specific project, it would be tremendously helpful if you could send it over for investigation or provide a step-by-step description of your actions!

          1. V-Ray 4.20.02 / Rhino 6 SR25
          2. V-Ray materials
          3. No, applied to general Rhino objects
          4. Some are, others are not
          5. One .abc proxy, but it was inserted directly

Unfortunately I can't share the model. I noticed it happened after the file (saved in OneDrive) was opened in other computer, saved, and then opened in the previous one. Not sure if it can be related. Path Editor had no errors.

I found that there seems to be an other bug which caused the lost materials. My objects have lost the connection to the V-Ray materials before. I hope they can reconnect since my models are quite complex. I will send an example scene.
So, purge removes the Rhino materials. I use V-Ray 4.20.02 and Rhino 6 SR27.
